DOE or NCT?

    Hi,

I bought a van last year ( 3 door car converted type) which i taxed and insured commercially as I was using it for work purposes. I was made unemployed at the end of last year, but actively looking for work in the same industry which would require transport, more than likely my own again.

The DOE is up on the van in March and i'm not sure whether to do the DOE again or the NCT on it. As I was working for a company, I have no Vat number and had to give my PRSI number to tax office to get the disc. The tax isn't up until April.

I was just wondering if anyone could give me advice on which would be the best option? If I get the DOE done on it and tax it commercially will I have to go through the same process as last year or will the renewal be more straight forward?

    Cheers!

I don't think you have any choice.
No matter if you are planning to tax it as goods vehicle or privately, it's still a van and needs DOE.

Unless you actually convert it into a car (add seats, etc) and have it formally confirmed by vehicle engineer or sth, you can't NCT that vehicle.

    CiniO,

Are you sure of this? I know someone who had the same type of van, as in 3 door conversion and he had the NCT done on it.

I always thought that the DOE was for commercially taxed vehicles? Is the test and type of tax not linked?

    Thanks!

At one stage you use to be able to nct privately taxed small vans when the rule about private tax first came out not anymore. The nct won't test it if it is commercial regardless of what way it's taxed. As for the second part of your comment I tax my van privately and doe it every year. Doe is the only option for commercial vehicles now.

which tax office will you be tax it at ...if you tax the van before in your name there no need for the "goods only declaration form" in some tax office on renewal ..so when you get renewal form in the post just tax it as a goods vehicle ........................van must be doe not nct

    Hi!

shooter88: Technically you need a vat number, this is what is asked for on the goods declaration form. However in the case I found myself in last year where I needed a van to do my job, but the company wouldn't provide one for me I was able to give my PPS number. I presume* this can be checked to see who I was employed by and whether I would need a van for such employment.

    * This being Ireland and our systems being such a doubt they actually get this information.

Bpmull: Thank you very much for your helpful post. I was always under the impression that the Tax/Road Worth tests were linked. Thank you for setting me straight in a helpful manner.

navara man:Ye the van was taxed in my name last year. Everything was straight forward last year as I was working when I bought the van so it was commercially taxed and insured with DOE.

    Thanks!
