How far from where you live can you join a club?

Hi, just moved to a large commuter town recently and wanted to join a local GAA club more or less starting from scratch, willing to give both codes a try. One is pretty close another a mile away.

    1. Am I obliged to join the one closest?
    2. Can I join either?
    3. Can I join one further afield, say 10 miles away?

My reasoning is I met with the 'closest' one earlier this week and unsure if I sense a good fit for what I'm looking for.

I don't think there is any obligation to play for the closest club so long as you live in the catchment area of the other club then you can join which ever one you feel is right for you

Thanks for response! What defines catchment area?

Under normal circumstances it would be by parish but in an urban area it would be within the town limits AFAIK but i am open to correction

Well I am halfway between the town centre of the town I live in and the neighbouring village club which is a mile away. I'm sure it will be fine!

    depends on the county

in Westmeath there is no parish rule
whereas in Longford, Roscommon, Offaly etc there are strong parish rules

That could leave you with an issue if you want to play both codes, I am guessing you are talking about Maynooth, Celbridge, Leixlip or Naas, Newbridge. If you are near Celbridge I would look at Ardclough for Hurling.

Longford have had no heed on parish rule....I think they have been trying to put the genie back in the bottle in the last year or two but before that there was fcuk all heed passed.
