A new 4G model of the PlayStation Vita will be replacing the 3G model sometime this year. According to the source, this will be the so-called “price drop” that has been rumored for the Vita as the new model will retain the $299 price point for an upgraded system.
The Wi-Fi version will still be available on the market for $249
To go along with the 4G model, a significant firmware update will go live bringing in a lot of requested features including new ways to organize apps in folders.
The new model may be unveiled along with the rumored PS4 this month at PlayStation’s February 20th event or at E3, but will not hit the market until later in the year.
A price cut on memory cards will be made. No details on prices.

Price drop the wifi unit sony, for gods sake. I don't even know what 4G is. I guarantee you'll see more with a reasonable price on the wifi unit than with a more expensieve 4G model.

Seeing as 3G is about as useful as nipples on the current Vita, 4G seems like a waste of time.

They would need to allow for online play over the network for it to be a viable option. I'd prefer if they gave us some built-in memory with the option of extending it with memory cards.

On the current set-up the extra speed 4G would offer is pointless so if they do add a 4G model then it's safe to say that the online options will increase.

I think Vodafone got the 4G contract, but if nobody can cover the country in 3G I wouldn't hold my breath !!

They got part of the spectrum just like the rest of the operators (more than the rest), they spent to most in any case but a lot of the costs were down to trying to maintain their 2G networks for the lot except 3 who didn't need it.

4G license for Ireland only requires coverage in main tows/cities at most so 4G is useless for most of the country.

Early reports say it is very hard on battery too compared to 3G so this is like a premium priced downgrade for Irish users.

I'd also be very surprised if Sony announced both PS4 and new Vita at same time. Would be a bad marketing move.

Some reports are stating that there'll be a lot of interaction between the PS4 and vita, having a new models if true would help promote both.

Everyone seems to be missing the important bit which I was also kind of predicting but more so hoping may also happen during the event on the 20th.

Although I do hope the news on the Vita is false, not because I'm disappointed I won't be getting the new model but because it's pointless. I don't even understand why anyone gets a 3G/4G model of anything unless it's a phone.

They need to drop the price, not make a crap improvement and keep it the same.

They need to drop the price of both the console and memory cards, announce exclusive titles, detail a future firmware update that marries the device to the PS4 as well as adding more features.

I really believe the Vita's uses and needs will become more apparent when the PS4 is announced. Gaikai comes to mind although I don't know how they would set that up.

25% price drop for the Vita and 50% for memory cards would convince a lot of people who are on the fence to commit.

Memory cards price cut would only be significant if its a significant percentage. If you look at adverts right now, the price you can get a vita for on there, or the actually good deal gamestop is doing on the vita, thats what we should be aiming for.

I'm still using the 4GB card I got with my Vita and won't upgrade until Sony either drop the price of cards and/or release a 64GB card too. And this is coming from someone who already owns a Vita.

    A 4G Vita isn't a major announcement, it's an aside.
