Enthusiast compacts...worth it?

I hate the term enthusiast for some reason but that's what they seem to be called.

I'm looking for something decent that I can take around with me as it's usually not practical for me to take my DSLR without a bit of planning.

The about-to-be-released Fuji X20 caught my eye. http://www.dpreview.com/previews/fujifilm-x20

The spec looks interesting, and the silver & black body is just sexy! But at DSLR prices would I be getting value for my investment.

I'm not asking specifically about the X20 but in general do these compacts (full manual, RAW shooting, image stabilised, but no changing of lenses) offer good bang per buck? Is there a better option?

Or is it impossible to answer for a whole class of camera?

Value is a personal thing that only you can decide.

To me it boils down to how much you are prepared to pay for the smaller size and greater utility of this class of camera.

I think the XZ-2 is overpriced by about €80, for instance.

I think they certainly offer very good bang for their size, but not for bucks, if one compares them with an APS-C DSLR. But you can't put brick in your pocket.

If I was going to be traveling light extensively, I wouldn't think twice about what I currently think is a price premium for the XZ-2.

You could think about the original X100 that will be cheaper as the X100S is released. I use it all the time and I love it. Such a good camera despite a couple of niggling issues.
This post links to refurbs you can buy too.

Have you considered the Sony RX 100? Not cheap, but tiny and outstanding.

I use both a Canon 1Ds Mklll & a 39mp Hasselblad, but I'm perfectly happy to leave them at home and take the Sony when taking pics for myself.

I'm not sure I could cope without a viewfinder. Hence my particular interest in the Fuji's

I've never felt comfortable using a standard compact with lcd.

I recently picked up a Sony NEX-6. This has a full APS-C sensor, and viewfinder, while the "kit" lens that it comes with being a power-zoom means that it is still capable of fitting in (large) pockets, and is very handy to carry around.

    It's a bit pricey though...
