Trade in on new car

I am looking to trade in my car for a new leon, but I haven't a clue what price I should be asking for the car.

It's a 2008 1.8Tdci Ford Focus with 47K miles. Prices for similar cars stand at about 11-12.5K but I wouldn't be expecting that.

I will be test driving the 2 ltr diesel Seat Leon FR, depending on trade in value I might end up going for the 1.6 Diesel, which retails at about 22K or close to it.

I might end up selling privately if I am giving a ridiculous offer but I wanted to know what I should expect on a trade in. Thanks.

Count yourself lucky if you get 9K trade-in value

I would think about the 9k mark. I would shop around. Go to at least 2 Seat Dealers. Also go to other dealerships to get an idea of how much you will get for yours against other makes. Don't be afraid to walk away and look for sweeteners.

Yea I won't dive in, if it's not right i'll be waiting another year or two and getting it second hand.

It's important to look at cost of change. One dealer may look for 23.5k for the car and offer you 11k for your own car coc 12.5k. A second dealer may look for 22k for the new car and offer you 10k for your car coc 12k euro. So the second deal is better even though you think you are getting less for your car. The above is just an example. But many dealers will just fiddle the figures so you think you are getting a great deal. Go with the garage which has the cheapest cost of change regardless of the trade in value would be my opinion. But I appreciate you were only looking at a rough trade in value I'd of said around 9k too.

I have only ever traded in twice and it was for "low" amounts, one was 2500 and the other was 750. I just wasn't sure if an offer of 6K was normal. It would turn me off a trade in completely.

Thanks for your offer, I will definitely be shopping around, i'm in no rush to buy and if I cannot get a good deal then i'll wait until next year and buy second hand.

If I were in your shoes I would try and sell the Focus privately. A low mileage diesel Focus with cheap tax should be easy enough to sell. Walk in and then negotiate a straight deal discount off the Leon then.
