Obsession with Flagpoles?

WTF is the obsession with flagpoles in Ireland??? From DCC putting in extra flagpoles at the Castle just in case the Troika didn;t see enough German and EU flags on the way in through the airport, to pubs up and down the country not satisfied until they have the flag of every county/country flying outside.

Here's the worst offender in Dublin.

I always look out for the Union Jack when I see all these flags displayed. Rarely will you see it though!

I thought you were, yep. If I'm wrong, I apologise for my erroneous assumption.

Pubs are probably doing it to show how welcome they are to all the nationalities.

Honestly, of all the things to take exception to about Ireland :pac:

It's no more an 'obsession' here than it is elsewhere.

Have you not noticed the 'fad' for pubs to be covered in flagpoles. I don't think it is just a Dublin thing.

You would be suprised how many living in the States are not 'from' the States. 37 million on the last count.

The 'selection' of nations displayed always amuses me.

If the purpose is being "all-inclusive" and friendly to all, why exclude the nearest country to you that sends the most tourists.

Maybe it's a bit of harmless jibbing on their part.

Tourists are free not to go there anyway, it's a private establishment after all.

Funnily enough though, that place is very popular with our visiting neighbors! I guess they don't go looking to be offended about the most menial of things.

Whatever about the flags, the pub in the picture need to be hauled up to an international court for the price of the booze, and that the selection isn't great. Could do with some US/EU craft beers

Where did I say I was offended? Relax the head; I'm just pointing out a fad in Ireland for flags. Pubs being much like car dealerships in the States trying to get as much attention as possible with flags.

However, I do think heritage buildings like the St John Gogarty should have to show some restraint, the St John Gogarty looks ****ing awful to be honest.

Maybe they don't want to get hassle from Irish 'republicans'.

    Such a non issue.

That's obviously an old photo as England played in Dublin last Sunday. That pub was covered with English flags with a huge banner out front welcoming English rugby fans. They do this for every foreign sports team that come to Dublin.

I pass by there most days, always tourist taking pictures of the flags. It's a curiosity that makes them business.

I don't think it's just a country flag thing either. In every town/ village, there's usually county or club flags flying.

From now til October, there'll be every sort of raggy flag proclaiming what county and club you're shouting for. Tis mighty. I love flags!

Fair enough, and that really isn't anything to do with the point I'm making. A one off like St John Gogarty is ok, but it seems every pub in Dublin now has to have flagpoles, and they look stupid and out of place.

And it is not just pubs, shops are in on it too - Grafton St is littered with them.

Yes, apologies, I suppose I took the thread off topic with my first post regarding not seeing the Union flag anywhere. You're correct, you will see the English flag sometimes (mostly during rugby weekends though), and conveniently to back up my point, the pic the OP posted happened to be missing the English flag. But you will rarely, if ever, see a Union Jack flying outside a pub. Guess it's still taboo.

Ooh! Ooh! Fantastic! I have a new word to put in planning observations!!! Thank you.

"The proposed development is marred by a superfluity of vexillological bedizenment"
