Was just chatting to a fiend about this, the price him and his partner pay is scandalous!

Could the government not subsidize it or open government funded child care centers.

No, because that would take common sense and the government are in pretty short supply of that.

    With what money exactly?

The government could do it, but you'd have to submit a request in writing to pick your child up every day and it'd take 6-8 weeks to be processed.

You shouldn't just take the fiends word, they can be rather dastardly.

    why is it so expensive?

    a) because to run a childcare business these days costs a small fortune
    b) cos children can be little b*stards and that costs

Wages, most Childcare workers are on or close to minimum wage (crazy considering the responsibility we give them) and this still keeps prices high.

For example up to 12 months the legal ratio is 1 member staff to 3 children ( I think) so 330 euro wage divided by 3 costs you 110 euro straight up add overheads like rent insurance, rates, light and heat, furniture, food and toys and you can see why it costs so much.

Realistically prices can't drop any lower without some form of grant for working parents.

Bonus note: the only way for crèches to make money is by cutting the level of care your sprog gets so the flashier the owners car is the worse the level of care is.

The reason childcare is so expensive is because it costs so much to comply with all the regulations. The reason there is so many regulations is because people demand them in order to ensure their kids are safe.

In fairness, they could find the money in any number of ways.

Give companies who provide on site childcare tax breaks, create CE schemes which employ people to work in after-school care, slash ministerial pensions, slash overseas aid and/or have the option to substitute child benefit for childcare vouchers.

Just a few options right there.

You've put your finger on something here. It's nowhere as expensive in other countries. Is it insurance because of our liability system here? or maybe our standards and requirements are so high that good people cant get into the business?

Subsidising something because its overpriced isn't the answer.

Wow. What ages are the kids? Did they not know this before deciding to have 3 kids? What sort of money does the partner take home?

The cost of insurance for those places is mad money, that is the highest % of the running cost.

FFS, a fully time nanny wouldn't cost as much.

My sister got to take a year off to look after her son cos she cant afford the childcare these days... I think it would cost her sister 60 euro a day

In France the average cost of child care for one child is €10 a day. The cost of living is not that different to the cost here.

I pay 50 euro per day for my two year old. Luckily we only need three days per week. We're considering a second. That would mean paying for 100 per day 4 times a week . On top of that we'd lose 350 euro rent per month as we won't have a spare room available to rent.

Wages, insurance, cost of rent crèches are businesses. Childminders are cheaper but some may be not qualified
If I have kids be just one as child care costs too much to have more
