    My cousin is selling her 1998 Audi A3 1.6 Sport for £1000 / €1162

She's the original owner, it's been serviced religiously and very well maintained, with only 45,000 miles on the clock. Mainly used for short London commutes, with a trip down to Surrey once a week.

Revenue is showing an OMSP of €2000, with €540 VRT to be paid on import. We've been keeping an eye out for a replacement for Mrs. Yam's 2000 1.9 Golf MklV and knowing the Audi's history is appealing, but given the costs associated with bringing it in, would we be better looking closer to home?

Knowing the history on a car is worth its weight in Gold. If it's clean, I would just say go for it if that's what you really want. Keep in mind that it'll need an nct and you never know, it could fail on something expensive, but you'll take that risk with any car. Personally, I wouldn't be jumping through hoops for a 1998 A3.

Nah. A 98 A3 isn't worth falling out over. Expensive too, considering VRT and NCT.

Thats a shocking amount of VRT on a fifteen year old car. If there is nothing wrong with it and you plan keeping it a long time then with that mileage I'd say offer her €750 for it...

€2000 is the minimum OMSP they'll assign now, used to be €1000.

    I wouldn't be at all tempted, €1500 would buy much better than a 98 A3 :)

The price is a bit high with vrt but considering the history of it I would be tempted as you could spend the same amount on a newer car but the miles will be higher and less known history if any at all..I always reckon a car a little bit older with good history and low miles is a better option if your not bothered about age

For a 15 year old car?

They may as well hand you a letter saying '**** you'.

With only that mileage and 1 owner from new, it's a risk worth taking imo for a few years of cheap motoring. I agree with Goz83 above - not a car I'd be wild about, but if it really is that tidy with genuine history, it should be good for a few years.

It's a pity your cousin isn't moving home with the car, wouldn't have to pay the VRT. They could bring the car over on the ferry, which would have to be done anyway and get a cheap Ryan air flight back. Would be cheaper than the VRT and legal.

I wouldn't pay 2 grand for it + the hassle

A lot of city driving. You might want to check the clutch

    And gearbox

Can't sell the car for a year though
