Do I have any comeback?

Ok so I don't know a lot about cars and I'll try and be brief.

Purchased an 01 golf 1.6 in sept from a garage for 2k.(overpaid I know)
Car seemed straight but I've had it in with an indie a few times since I got it.
Yesterday the red oil light came on and it was brought straight to garage. Car was inspected and mechanic noted the car is a mish mash of bits. Throttle body from 1.8, egr is wrong, loose cables, wiring is a mess. Engine prob not original and burning oil.
Oil switch was replaced but the engine light is permanently on. There was apparently a bodge done around the lambda an there's an unknown air leak.
The car underneath is basically not worth pourin money into per mechanic.

I know the answer to this I think but do I have any recourse with dealer I bought from?(I'm guessing not)
Hearts broke with the car as like most don't have an endless supply of funds to pour into an old car.

    Thanks to anyone who replies

Did you get any warranty with it, and have you gone to the garage (that you bought it off) with any of the previous faults?

6 months down the road, I doubt you will get anything

Had 1 mth gbox and engine now expired
Had it back within a week with dealer for engine light on. It turned itself off. He said there was no live faults

Was thinking along those lines myself. Only reason I'm questioning that logic is that the car has so many pieces not correct to the car. If I was notified of this I wouldn't have bought it.

On that point I know if the car just broke generally after 6 mths it's down to me. Its an older car and I'd expect that to be true. My post is because there's more to it. Before I cut my losses I just thought I'd ask:)

check the engine number against the tax book, if there not the same you might have a case

The dealer will probably just say that it must of been changed before they took hold of it, and that they wern't aware that it was changed.

They saw you coming OP and you have learned a hard lesson. Bring someone who really knows what they are looking at the next time you are shopping for a car. (fairly soon by the sound of things...)

having said you wont get much out of them, t's still worth a try. They may give you a generous p/ex against something else perhaps.

So the faults started appearing after only one week? How long did it take for the next fault to appear? How often were you in contact with the seller? What was his response?

It's appears the dealer sold you a pile of shíte, which they are legally not obliged to do. It's unfortunate 4 months has lapsed since you bought the car. But maybe you were in contact with the seller previous to this, and he wasn't playing ball?

Is there a third party witness (your indie garage) that could confirm the car was not 'fit for purpose' closer to the sale date.

Take no notice of a 1 month warranty, a car dealer cannot sell a car to the general public unless it's 'fit for purpose'. We need more details.

There is a limit however. Depends what form of receipt the OP signed and the chain of events afterwards. If they went back in a week with problems and the car was remedied then the car at that point was 'fit for purpose' as the seller happily drove away in it. The OP should have had it checked if they were in any doubt as is reasonable. The fact that they didn't is in the favour of the dealer. The OP by his book was happy and so was the car after the sale. The dealer did give a 1 month warranty which does account for some 'good will'

You can't go back 6 months later with faults that were (now clearly) there all along i.e. Its not a problem that developed, its a problem there since the start. It doesn't sound right. I believe there is reasonable doubt as playing devil's advocate, theres nothing to say the OP didn't change all the parts themselves and are trying to pull a fast one (No offence OP, just saying what could be said)

Had you gone back within the month I'd probably be saying fight it but too much time as elapsed. Its a lemon and it will probably cost you in time, effort and pain a lot more than the €2000 you paid. You'd probably re-coup 60% of that in parts. I'd just accept it and be more careful next time.

If there was a changed engine and it was not sold as such (or not on the log book) you should have a case to take them to the small claims court. As a garage they should check on this as it was not a private sale:cool:. Best to approach them with this and see how they react. If they don't try to meet you some of the way lodge a small claim with the court - costs little and you may get back some of your money.
