Peugot 407 gear problems

    Just looking for any opinions on this, for the last few weeks my 05 peugot 407 hdi has been dropping out of 5th gear only, initially just at high speeds, now happening routinely. Left it into peugot garage who checked linkages, topped up gear oil but couldn't find anything wrong so 85 quid later I am none the wiser. They have said they will have to take the gear box out now and think maybe replacing a plate(?) that sits I think under the gearbox would be worth a try, cost €365, if doesn't work maybe new gearbox needed.
    Forgot to ask for a quote for a gearbox replacement but I fear it's going to be huge, 192k km on the clock and we have had a whole host of problems with this car, every trip to garage seems to need hundreds and once over a €1000 of work.
    just wondering if anyone know what's causing this problem and if I would be crazy to fork out for a new gearbox in this car, a year ago a mechanic recommended getting rid but can really afford a change up unless really needed.

    The last 407 1.6 hdi i seen hoping out of 5th gear had no oil in the gearbox...:eek:
    I would be cheaper to pick up a s/h gearbox and get an independent Garage to fit it.....btw if the car has done more than 100k mls then while the box is out it would be no harm in checking/replacing the dmf and clutch.
