Check that the existing hard drive is Sata and check the dimensions, if it is and then that should be fine.

Would this hard drive be ok?

    Yes.

Your current drive is SATA-150, this one is SATA-300, but they're backward compatible so it will work on your controller.

    Yes - that will do.
If you want to transfer programs & files from the existing hard drive to the new one, cloning software such as Acronis True Image will allow you to clone the older smaller drive onto the newer larger one. No need then to re-install Windows or any programs or files.

It's fairly quick, but if the existing laptop is running slow, you are better off re-installing windows from scratch followed by your programs and files.

Yes, but you can clone the disk to image onto an external hard drive and then restore it onto the new drive.

Don't have a external HDD handy.

    Pretty much so, yes.

Or backup the files and install the OS from scratch, can't beat a fresh start. ;)

That cable should be fine but make sure your laptop power supply is connected you wouldn't want the battery to run out part way through. Also remember the data transfer rate over USB is pretty low so if you are cloning a 500GB drive it could take 23 hours over USB 2.0.

If you have a tower with a couple of spare SATA sockets I would put both the hard drives in and use the tower to clone. It will be a lot quicker.
