Bought it with a load of work done and receipted for with approx 150,000 on the clock including clutch and dm f/wheel.
Last year on hols in France with the car fully loaded we were stuck in a very slow moving traffic jam on a very long hill.1st gear -2nd gear-Stop repeat multiple times. Started to smell the clutch and started to fear the worst but then we cleared the jam and went on our merry way.
This eve a friend got stuck in some very boggy grass and towed him out. He was well bogged on and really took an effort to get him out.
Really had to work the engine and started to smell the clutch again.Got the car out and took the car for a short spin and sure enough was displaying signs of a worn clutch.
But then ,like last year, the symptoms went away.
Would this be a symptom of a cheap non OEM clutch be fitted.
Do mostly motorway miles and very little traffic driving with approx 162,000 on the clock.
Now we are just about to buy a trailer tent to tow down thru France.
I am now thinking that before we do this I will troubleshoot and replace the clutch.

Sounds to me like like your slipping, overworking and overheating the clutch if youre getting that burnt smell. Naturally once the clutch cools back down, it will feel tighter and smell will obviously be gone.

Same with brakes, if you give them a good thrasing around a lap they will turn to putty, feel spongy and you'll get a burning smell off them, then once they cool off they will regain their effectiveness.

That being said, it doesnt sound like youre being the most mechanicaly sympathetic driver either and if you keep doing a lot stop-start driving when fully loaded up a hill, and pulling your mates out of bogs that really "take an effort" i really cant see tgat clutch lasting you much longer. As to be expected really.

A clutch's longevity depends on how it is being treated. So if it doesnt last you too long, its not really the clutch's fault

    Thanks for the reply.
I really didnt have a choice when and where the traffic jam was (it was as a result of a nasty smash..next time I will ask them to be a bit more considerate where they flip their car.
And I amhardly going to drive away when a good friend is stuck.
As I said I do mostly motorway miles and very little traffic/city driving....in fact...when getting up to speed on the motorway I dont even use the clutch when shifting 3rd -> 4th -> 5th.
When using the clutch in normal use there is no problem and gets a clean shift.
These are the only 2 times in 18mnths of onwership that I have smelt the clutch.
As replacing the clutch in these is an expensive enough job.

You're pretty much answering your own question then.

The clutch behaves fine except for when youre giving it stick, which is when youre getting that burning smell and the clutch goes spongy.
The "burning smell" and the clutch "displaying signs of a worn clutch" after giving it death trying to pull somebody out of a bog is not abnormal giving the circumstance and stress you were putting it under.

My point being that there doesnt seem to be anything wrong with your clutch. Even a brand new clutch will behave the same under heavy strain. It doesnt mean that its a "Cheap" clutch or that it's not an "OEM" clutch.

Any clutch will display those signs under undue stress.
