Thompson Bikes (R7200)

Can anyone give me any reviews on the Thompson bikes (r7200). I am hoping to buy a new bike soon. I previously owned a trek 1.5 and would like to get something different. I'm willing to spend up to €1400 euro and would like to get a light weight Aluminium bike. I have been looking at the thompson bikes at my local dealer and they have some good components on them. I have been looking for some reviews but not finding much. Here's a link to the thompson website.

I'm hoping to avail of the bike to work scheme so buying online is not a option.

    http://www.thompson.be/th-web2013/engels/race-r7200.asp

    Thanks in advance

Id suggest that something 'better known' MIGHT hold its value better...

But if nobody buys 'em, how will they get better known?:)

But anyway, OP, which groupset are you getting for your €1400? 105 or Tiagra I presume, going by the prices on the manufacturers site? It seems a bitweighty for the money. Almost 9kg with Ultegra.
I've no experience of the brand myself, but they've been mentioned here once or twice, apparently well known in Belgium.

I know you said you wanted Alu, but this Orbea looks like a good deal around your budget. You'd have to get yourself to Dundrum though.

Whaatever you get, make sure it's comfortable, anything else is a bonus:D

When my friend was buying one of those I'd never heard of them either. For whatever it's worth, he bought it anyway and loves it.

Very expensive and weighty. At this price point I'd except carbon and 105, shouldn't be a problem online.

Thats a good point if nobody trys them!

The price i got is 1300 with 105. They seem to be well know in belgium alright and looks a very smart bike. I plan to stick with Alu for now. I wouldnt get to tied up with weight if the bike has good components.

Was looking at BMC bikes too. Seem like a nice bike and get some good reviews. Just waiting on a price back on a BMC Grandfondo, Its replacing the Streetfighter. Meant to be in around the 1500 mark.

I wont rule out the Thompson either. hope to get some more feedback on them.

    Thanks for reply.

It was 7200 but I can't remember the groupset. I'll ask him for a review and what groupset he got but it will take a while.

Was looking at some BMC bikes (Alu) Streetracer. Does anyone know anything about these or any reviews at all on BMC ?

    Thanks in advance

ok, so while my friend likes cycling and likes his bike, it seems he doesn't actually care about bikes per se that much.

He confirmed that he likes the Thomson a lot and that he's done several thousand km on it with no problems. As far as the group set goes he told me the salesman went in to great detail but all he heard was "blah blah blah Shimano blah blah". So possibly not the most detailed review you could hope for. :D Sorry.

I Have one of theese bought in November 2012. I have only used it a few times as i also have a winter bike (as i would call it) until the weather picks up. i have upgraded the wheels to mavic krysium equipes as the standard wheels in my opinion do not seem overley durable. The mavics look nice too :D;)

The resale value is not a concern of mine as i cant see myself selling it anytime soon. I know i could have bought a canyon but working out the sizes is firmly placed on yourself to get it right. it is also good to be able to go back to a local shop when you have a problem with the bike.

A similar Trek/Spec/Kellys would have been 300 euros more........ for a same specced bike. thats enough of a reason to buy the Thompson for me anyways ;)

The 105 5700 is nice and smooth. Its the only groupset that i have used before so cant comment on higher shimano groupsets.

I bought mine in white/ red and i think its nicest in that colour scheme.

Thanks for some feedback on thompson because not finding many people than own one! The resale value is not a huge concern for me either because plan to hold it for a few years.

For the few spins you had on it how did you find it from comfort/stiffness ?

Red and white looks good alright.

    Thanks in advance

The prices are comparable to a carbon Ribble bike. Is there a particular reason you want Aluminium?

    they/them/theirs

Would that be entry level carbon? I'm happy enough to cycle a light weight Alu bike and keep the few pounds of myself!!

I think long term the Alu bike Will take more abuse and still get a few pounds back when selling it on.

Picked up a second hand Thompson for a friend of mine a while back.... Alu with carbon fork... Very sweet bike
I'd say they are good value....
Staggs in Lucan carry them now too which helps if you have any issues but based on what I've seen they seem robust so doubt they're be any... But you never know!!!?

They look to have some nice bikes and not badly priced either. Its out of the question for me because i plan to buy local and do Bike to work scheme. Have it down to thompson or BMC at the moment.

    Thanks again.

Anyone else able to add any reviews on Thompson bikes?

A friend of mine asked me to take a look at a bike he seen for sale, it's a Thompson Apollo carbon bike with full 105 group set. The bike looks really good in the pictures but I can't find a single review or otherwise about that particular model. It's on Donedeal and priced at €750 and the seller states it was bought in 2012 and hasn't been used much. I think it seems like very good value for a carbon frame and full 105 but would like to hear others thoughts before going to look at it.

Seems far too cheap, stolen perhaps?

yeah seems to good to be true :).anyways have used my thompson for a while now and i still love it ).would like to upgrade tiagra groupset but unless u go ultegra or higher there is no point i think.and those are pricy.the bike rides nicely so far.broke spokes twice and was looking at wheel upgrade but again unless u spend 600 euros there wont be much improvement.damn it.

Stagg cycles in Lucan sell these and they appear to be an excellent bike for the price. Both Jimmy and his son ride them. I tested one while i was looking but unfortunately my btw scheme has a set list of shops and i couldn't convince them to use Staggs.

I'd guess at 750 that maybe is was a btw bike and the seller is only looking to recoup what he spent ? Might be worth checking with staggs to see if there is a record of serial numbers kept to see if it's genuine or stolen

the one in ferrybank on adverts is marked as sold now in any case. Given there's so few of them around I'd guess that's it ?

heard a few complaints about the high end Thompsons, friends frame cracked where the seatpost enters the frame, problems with the seat clamps I seen from someone else. Heard a story, not sure if its true but from a guy I trust, all the NRPT bikes had to be replaced???? All these bikes were new this year, that said they are stunning machines.
