Lingual Braces V Traditional Braces

I'm 32 and I've finally decided to bite the bullet and get braces to correct my 'buck' teeth!...:D
Had an ortho consultation last week and he said I have 2 options:
Traditional Braces Top and Bottom (ceramics/steel) - 4100 euro
Lingual braces (Incognito) Top and Bottom (5500 - 6000)
Will be wearing them for 18-24 mths.
However he's told me I need to get 2 teeth removed before getting braces - not too happy about extracting 2 healthy teeth spo going to get a second opinion on this.

But....I'm seriously considering the lingual braces for the reason that I may have to wear them for 2 years so would prefer hidden ones if i've got to wear them for that long.

Is there anybody here who already has/had linguals recently? If so, some questions for you...
Do they affect your speech much? Ortho says they affect speech same as traditional ones but I've read online that they take longer to get used to.

Does anyone know if they take longer to do the job? Would traditional braces work faster?? Again, orthodontist says they are as effective as traditional ones and that they work the same as traditional ones (I was surprised at this as surely its easier to push teeth back that pull them back??)

I'm going to get another opinion this week but in the meantime if anyone out there has them on I'd love to hear some feedback from you.
    Thanks :)

Ok I am no orthodontist but the lingual braces are very fancy, computer made brackets placed on the inside of your teeth. They can achieve the same movements as traditional braces, but they are harder to manufacture, fit and adjust, basically cause the orthodontist has a harder time getting at them cause of their position.

You speech will be more effected cause of where they are (is all temporary). Your oral hygiene will be harder because of where they are.

As for speed of treatment I will leave it to one of the orthodontists to comment.

If the singer Faith Hill can go the 2013 Grammys with ceramic braces, and Tom Cruise equally managed braces a few years ago, who/what has made everyone else so self-conscious?

I've said it before and I will say it again - no one will care you're wearing braces.

I'm older than you (not by much!) and deal with a lot of people on a daily basis for work, nobody bats an eyelid. I have the ceramics and delighted with the results so far. You won't be conscious of your braces after a while, they'll become second nature. Best of luck.

    Just get the clear braces,
    Easiest, Bit more expensive
    But not by much
You avoid mouth full of metal,

I'm bridesmaid for my little sister's wedding in September and will be getting married myself next year so didn't want the visible ones for that reason

You could have them removed for the wedding and them put back on for a lot less than the lingual braces......lingual braces are great dont get me wrong, but usually the simplest way is always the best. As Dianthus says, nobody give a flip about adults with braces these days.

    Hi there

the treatment time should be the same for both lingual and "normal" braces
Your speech will lisp for 3-4 weeks with lingual, normal braces dont really interfere with speech much

If you are unsure about the extractions then get 2nd opinion, you did mention buck teeth so extractions can be used to correct this but no way of knowing without 2nd opinion

    good luck!

I never knew you could get braces removed for a day. I presume you can't get the lingual ones removed as they're literally stuck to the teeth.

I've the clear braces as above and the wire is not visible in photos. I've also heard rumour of a clear wire you can get for a special occasion such as the wedding.

I've had mine on 3 weeks and the movement is unreal. I'm same age. I found myself pointing out the fact that I got braces to people when I met them but they hadn't even noticed!

Yep, with all the feedback here I'm starting to change my mind now....think the ceramic ones might be the way to go. The lisp thing is kinda putting me off the linguals now. And once I can take the ceramics off for a day that would be fine. Will double check that at my second consultation this Friday

As Duberlin Chick says you can't see them in photos so don't worry. Yep, the movement is awesome, you can't stop looking at them. I'm amazed by them every day, it's like magic!

Ok, so had my second opinion consultation today and I'm glad to say her advice was the same as my first consultation. Only difference was the price - quoted same price for ceramics but was quoted almost 2000 more for the linguals. She also gave me the option of having ceramics top and bottom which the first orthodontist didn't as he told me that sometimes the bottom ceramics chip the top front teeth so he only fits ceramics on top and steel on bottom. Has anyone any feedback on this? She also told me that taking the braces off for a day can be done but is not advised as it can set your treatment time back 6 months!! All in all I think I'll go for the ceramics with my first orthodontist. Can't wait to get the ball rolling now :)
Thanks to all for your help :)

Really? Would have thought it would set you back a day, open to correction.
