Fun weekend car wanted, sell current or trade in?

    Hi All,

I used to commute 67 miles each way Mon-Fri, but now I have moved much closer to work and can use public transport. I currently have a 05 Mercedes c200 cdi with 108k miles, leather interior, climate control etc.

I want to get a fun & fast petrol car for the weekends and have about 4k cash, I think I have 2 options to achieve this:

    1. Sell car for cash on donedeal or something (this would allow me to buy in cash from dealer or buy from private seller)
    2. Trade car in with dealer when purchasing next car (would have to buy from dealer)

    So I have 2 questions,

    1. Which of the two options above do you think is best?
    2. Recommendations for fun, fast car, I intend on keeping it for about 2 years and only driving on weekends. The criteria would be ideally petrol, fast, decent spec and comforts (leather, air con etc).

    thanks

if you did manage to sell it privately it definitely gives more options on what you can buy.

plenty of big petrol engined cars out there for little money too.

I still have my eyes on the volvo s80's with high specs !

Selling privately would be give me more options I agree, but its a lot of hassle Im guessing, I have never sold privately before.

I do like the s80, I used to have an s40 and volvos are so comfy and well specced. This time round I am looking for something a bit more 'ridiculous' mainly because I want to get something a little crazy for 2 years before family takes over!

    Cooper S
    MX5

The mazda is not particularly fast, but they're supposed to be savage craic. Went for a spin in a very early model and it was a blast.

They are not particularly comfortable but an integra dc2 could be got for under 4k and are good to drive and own, with good reliabilty and low maintainance costs.

Good suggestions, some I hadn't thought of, I reckon adding the 4k to what I get for my merc I should be able to reach around the 10k?

What I had thought of so far was:
    - 645i (If I can find one for the money)
    - Z4 3 litre
    - Merc CLS 3.5

Some of the suggestions above are a little too boy-racery for my liking, but I do like the suggestions of:
    - Mini Cooper S (never even considered this)
    - S2000 (reliability?)
    - MX5

I severely doubt you would get a decent S15 turbo or S2000 for 4k (although I could be wrong).

    Other options:
Nissan S14a, Nissan 180sx, Focus ST170 (there is one on donedeal), Mazda RX-7 (don't know if you would get a good one for 4k though) or an RX-8.

My advice would be try to sell privately, you will get a better deal and more scope for a private sale. If you can't shift her for the price you want then trade her in.

You won't find a good s15 for 4k. You have to spend a lot of time looking for the right s14a too, its not the kind of car you can just go out and buy in the morning. There are a lot of bad ones out there.

wow, that M3 you posted sean_dub is nice, what do you guys reckon would be a good price for a quick sale?

If you want to minimise the amount of money you want to spend then selling the Merc prviately is the way to go. Unfortunately selling privately can take effort, time and patience as you do have to deal with tyre kickers and as such.

Regarding recommendations, how about a Mazda RX-8:

Actually someone selling one of these might be interested in a swap plus cash your way for your more frugal Merc.

I'd be after something cheap to tax like a classic or this.

I'd say around 6750 or 6500 for a quick one judging by the other ones up already

You'll find one for 7 r 8k . The merc will bring at least another 4 into the budget.
