Some interesting price comparisons on the VW website.

A Golf 1.6tdi Highline (which has comparable equipment as a Comfortline Passat) - €27,695

    Passat 1.6tdi Comfortline - €29,545

Keep in mind you would bag a bigger discount new on the Passat versus little to nothing on the Golf so very little between them on price.

Passat looks like much more care for the money to me.

I appreciate that, but it is till a full class down from the Passat. I've sat in the new Golf and was a bit disappointed by the interior, touchscreen and all, after all the hype. There is a lot of hard flat plastic on show.

The Golf. The most underspecced and overrated car going (IMHO, I know many swear by them and are popular for a reason).
I assume the baseline still comes with those lovely plastic wheel trims instead of alloys ;)

Of course it does, it's a VW after all:).

The Passat also has independent rear suspension, something that VW were too stingy to fit as standard to the new Golf unless you buy a high powered model, which of course nobody will.

The Passat was launched before the Flood. It's gotta be the oldest model in its sector by some way. You'd be mad to pay top dollar for a new one.

You would be hard pressed to notice the more basic suspension at the back of the new Golf - it drives and rides quite well, if a little soft with standard suspension.

It is however hideously expensive if you want a decently powered diesel.

Your are spot on OP. Most of the smaller class of vag cars are over priced when looked at against the passat. Its pretty good value now imo and while the passat is very obviously a facelift and not a new car, im quite surprised at the advances compared to the last version. Its a much better drive, nicer steering feel and the suspension seems to give much more feel of the limit and less boat like. Interior is also nicer.
THe 1.6 tdi is not suitable though to be fair.
