    Hi guys

I recently applied for a promotion in work. I'm booked on a holiday on the particular day. What should I do , cancel my holiday at loss to myself or phone them and explain . I feel by phoning and cancelling interview I am not showing full commitment to position or will they view it like that. They have giving me very little notice of interview.

    Thank you

Hard to say from an external viewpoint, but if the company is anyway reasonable then they should surely appreciate that as last minute interview isn't feasible if you've already got plans made.

Talk to them, and be proactive, see if they can reschedule to before/after he event. Perhaps suggest a phone/Skype session if there is some reason that they are completely locked in to one date. Bring them some suggestions and if nothing else, it'll give a positive impression that you really want this and are willing to try and work with them to find a way that works for everyone.

How far in advance was your holiday booked? If it was booked before you applied, then they may think it fair enough that you need to reschedule.

If you don't ask, you won't get. Perhaps tell them that the job is very important to you and you would be prepared to reschedule your holiday but that it would be at a significant financial loss to yourself. Tell them you will cancel, and hope they don't take you up on it. By saying you would be prepared to cancel, shows that you are committed. If they are decent, and have the time slots available, they should be willing to be flexible in so far as they can.

  • I definitely wouldn't cancel a holiday for a job interview, but that's just me. I've been to quite a few interviews over the last year or two where it was clear that they'd already hired someone internally and they were just going through the motions/wasting my time. I was p*ssed off enough about taking time off work, can't imagine how annoyed I'd have been to have lost a holiday!

I'd imagine most companies would be willing to reschedule if you explain that this has been booked and paid for for ages.

i suspect this maybe the case as in the job is already filled and they are just going through the motions. i cancelled holiday as i might not get this position but in the future if i am seeing to be interested and enthusiastic my time will hopefully come. thank you for replies
