Tips on how to ask for extended time off work?

    hi,
Due to a variety of personal reasons (including trying to get my health back on track), I really, really want to take 3 months off work. I've been with the company for a long, long time and I know that other people have in the past gotten up to 2 months off, but that was a while back now. So it wouldn't exactly be the 'norm'.
I know that my boss won't be happy about it, but rather than just hand in my notice I would really like to try & put across some valid points for giving me an extended break.
    I suppose I just feel if I don't ask, I won't get - now I probably won't get anyway but.....

Any tips on how to approach this? I'd be willing to continue working for next 2 months and go then, so as to try & have as much as possible done before I go.

    Fools errand?

Honesty is definitely best policy. You could send him an email briefly suggesting what your thinking but like to talk to him/her in person or else you could maybe tell a colleague and explain to them your position but you are quite nervous about approaching your manager on subject. Your health is your wealth at the end of the day

Your boss could jump at the chance to give you unpaid leave, there might be a saving in it for them.

I'm talking about unpaid. To be honest, I think the boss will just laugh in my face. I was doing 2 people's jobs until late last year when a replacment was brought in for one of the areas. While this has freed me up a bit more to concentrate on my core area, I feel it's a bit too little, too late and my health has seriously suffered as a result.
Problem is, now that there is this other person/help after being brought in, I think the boss will be thinking why would I need time off now that my work load has decreased?

I'm not sure that honesty is the best policy in this case, as if he refuses me the leave then he knows that I dont want to be in work/it alerts him that I'm unhappy...

Would your doctor sign you off for extended sick leave? I'm not advocating fraud ... but if your health has suffered ...
