Edit: Anyone here ever visit this famous French town where the Virgin Mary was supposed to have appeared to a young girl, Bernadette Soubirous,in 1858? :p

I was never there but was at the Irish equivalent of it.

I wasn't Branie but it's meant to be a lovely experience and seemingly great craic in the hotels at night.

My auntie went to Lough Derg..that's mad stuff to be at altogether..walking up a mountain in bare feet...fasting and only eating some kind of horrible bread and water.

    Is Bernadette Soubirous still alive?

    No. She died in 1879

I went as a Scout leader many years ago. We didn't do the religious thing but the amount of shops selling holy crap was amazing. Literally supermarkets with whole aisles dedicated to mary statues and bottles in the shape of mary for taking home the magic water. There are loads of young people pushing wheelchairs during the day. The old part of the town is nice though and if you ever get there the funicular is cool. As said at night all the nurses come out to play and a bit of craic can be had :)

God didn't look after her very well. She can't have been that old when she died.

I visited it some years ago.
Happened to be in the north of Spain, and decided to take a drive up,seeing it was so close.

I found it to be overly commercialised, and this took from the notion that Lourdes is supposed to be whatever......holy/place of miracles,etc.....

Once I escaped the throngs of traders selling overpriced souvenirs, beggars pleading for a few euro....and headed to the grotto/church area-there was a calm, serenity about the place.

    Am glad that I went.
