It's a fair shout. He has carried this form from 2012 and he just seems to be improving. He's an amazing putter and his swing just looks effortless. Hard to call number 1 material but I fancy him for a major.

True test will come when he has some competition at the top of a leaderboard on day 4 - he does have the potential, makes for a great year ahead with woods rekindling form, micko hitting a driver straight, rory destroying quality fields and now sneds finding quality consistency. Any 3 of those 4 in final group on day 4 of a masters would be tough to call a winner.

IMO, Sneds yet to prove he has what it takes...

World number 3 soon enough, will be hard enough to budge the top 2 id say.

His no nonsense/ simple approach to the game of golf is a breath of fresh air in these days of 5 hours plus rounds, and would be great to see a golfer of his like make it to no1.
Great role model for kids and adults alike to show that you don't have to play slowly and methodically to be the best player you can be! Plays on pure instinct and is a pleasure to watch.
Shaping up to be a great season of golf :0)

Sorry, the cool "no" answer has already been done chief, see post #2.

To both of you I ask the simple question of "why not"?

He's not a "dominator" of tournaments, hasn't really challenged in a major, plus I really believe Rory and Tiger are in a whole different league compared to him. Hel get to no3 and rightly so but certainly not no1.

    is/was Luke Donald a dominator?
    Vijay? Kaymer, Westwood?

Most of the time its not dominators, its guys who are consistent.

Consistently winning/contending in tournaments is dominating in my opinion!

Which is what Snedeker has been going now for near a year.

winning a-la Woods yes, lots of top 10/20's is not dominating for me, yet I reckon if you were top 20 in every event youd have #1 easy.

Yes indeed but not showing in majors where points are huge! He's Defo a no3 but I can't see him breaking the big 2

Didnt he come 3rd in the open last year?

If he keeps playing the way he's been playing lately, he's certainly going to give Rory and Tiger a run for their money at the top of the rankings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,695 ✭✭✭ForeRight

By the way I'm not saying he will be world no.1

I'm just saying I would not dismiss it as quickly as others might. If he contends all year again with the amount of tournaments he plays compared to Rory and tiger I wouldn't be at all surprised if he came close.

Vijay certainly was in his prime. From 03-05 he was almost Tiger-esque, particularly in 2004 when he won a heap of tournaments inlcuding the PGA.

Westwood, Donald and Kaymer, in all fairness took advantage of Tiger's time off to get to the top. Consistency is fine and will get your to number 1 in an era where there's no dominating player. Now there's not 1 but 2 of them.

So as for Snedeker, yeah he looks good and has a fantastic putting stroke but he'll have to win a major or 2 and hope there's a drop off from the top 2 to get to world number 1. I just don't see it at the moment. Great guy to watch all the same.

I think it would need to be a combination of him winning a few big tournaments close together and a serious drop off in form of the top two for it to happen. While one of those might occur I can't see both happening in around the same time.

Was hoping you'd comment on this thread abff :)

Any idea what it would take for him to reach no. 1?
(How long is a piece of string I know :D)

....But, assuming Rory won 1 major and 5 tour events over the next 2 years (and Tiger didn't better that), what would Snedeker have to do to jump him?

Appreciate it's hard to say, but seeing that you like your stats, you might have a rough estimate of the task at hand?

Is Tiger really still a dominating player?

4 wins in the last 12 months probably says he is. I know he didn't do it in the majors but if you consider that himself and McIlroy won 8 tournaments between them last year, along with a pile of top 10s on top of that I think that's as strong or dominating top 2 as there could be at the moment when one takes into account the depth of talent on tour at present.

Snedeker to be fair is as close as anyone at this moment in time to closing the gap to Tiger and Rory.

I see him as a Steve Stricker, consistently a very good player but just that bit short of becoming the best.

Only difference is I think Snedeker will snag himself a major at some stage. Probably with a trademark last day surge.

So far he has suffered from nerves when in contention at the majors so it will be interesting to see if he can learn from past experiences and play well on a Sunday when he has a chance to win a major

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,098 ✭✭✭Johnny_Fontane

I think if he heats up the putter, he has every chance at this years masters, which as most people know is actually a putting competition.:D

I think he is a fine player. A bit about him too, in interviews etc. A bit older and has lived a bit.

Love his quick routine and all seems very compact even his putting is compact and all stuck together - it is all working and and does not look like too much can go wrong.

He looked a bit star struck last year during big finishes - but has moved on. And won anyway.

But after all that - look at the lads over the last few years who were the next big thing -
    D Johnson
    K Bradley
    R Fowler
    J day
    H Mahan
    J Duffner
    Adam Scott

They all had very hot streaks and then a drop in form. So very hard to say.

Another player who I can only see go up is Rose too - very impressed with his slow progress . He does suffer last day shakes too but. Hopefully the ryder cup helped him there.

But on their day - nobody same level as top two - but the long list of players below (top 20) who can have hot days - makes it harder for the top 2.

+1 on Justin Rose. But still subject to the the Sunday afternoon shakes imo.

Has the game & on his day the mental strength that so many others lack.
    Best course manager on tour.

Always had the impression that something happens that knocks Snedeker out of his stride, particularly being paired with players like Jason (All) Day or Keegan Bradley whose tempo & pace of play differ from his, and he can't recover.

Even if he never becomes world number 1 Snedeker has won $2.85m this year alone!

I don't think there's a lot between the top players ,but so far this year he has a first ,two seconds, and a third in his last four starts .so far Rory started on and missed the cut . So I know who I'd have my money on if they meet in the match play next week
