    Hi,

Had an accident on Friday. Someone crashed into my parked car. They admitted responsibility and gave me all their insurance details.

    Two questions:
Do I need to get two quotes for repair or can ai just bring it to a body shop of my choice?

Can I get a hire car while my own is being repaired?

    Thanks,
    M

it might depend on their insurance company how if they want to but usually one will do and it is your choice where you go for a quote, depending on damage it might be written off..make model year???

To be honest, the only people who can answer, or that you should ask, is your insurer. Just get very them a call.

you should be either given a car while yours is been fixed a good few places will do this or you might be able to get a hire car and they pay.
give your ins company a ring and they will tell you if the costs cover a hire car

I can't really see what OP's insurer has to do with it.

Damage was done by third party, and will be paid by third party insurer.

If I were OP I would contact third party insurer, and consult it with them.

Anyway - decision if OP deserved replacement car for the duration of his own being repaired is not up to insurer. OP deserves it. He can rent it and send invoice to third party insurer.
I'm not sure if OP is completely free to choose any garage which will be fixing his car, but would think he is.

Situation would be completely different if damage was caused by OP and claim would be proceeded by his own insurer (from his comprehensive policy).

From recent experience, if you go to your choice of repair shop, get a quote, the insurance company will run it through their systems per part repaired/replaced and if it comes within their limit, they'll go ahead with it, if not, they'll negotiate directly with the repair shop to get it within spec. No need for multiple quotes. Repair shops know the story, if you have one you trust, they'll walk you through it.
Good photos help to speed things up as it can negate the need for an assessor to look at it. If possible get an angle with reg plate visible and damage and add close ups of damage.
As its a claim against a third party, you're entitled to a like for like replacement for the duration until the repairs are complete. They'll push you to transfer your insurance to the rental but limit this to your third party cover, i.e. any damage you do to others driving their car, the third party extension on your policy should be enough, make them cover the rental car itself, full CDW.

Some repair centres will quote for a hire car included in the total bill that gets sent to the other insurance company. So you don't have to go chasing hire cars etc

Ace auto body in Finglas for example, I got a little panda from them a year or two ago after a similar incident involving one of my old cars.

    Hi Guys,

    Just an update:

Insurance company want the car to be assessed prior to repair (fair enough). The door and the front wing are damaged. I want them both replaced. Is that realistic, or will the assessor want a cheaper option (I'm really particular about my car)? His report could take 4 days (basically until Friday).

The insurance company said they'll only give a rental for 14 days. Now the car will almost certainly be repaired by then (hopefully). However, if its not will I be car-less for a few days? It doesn't seem fair in the case where I'm not liable at all in the accident?

It looks like you are fixing your car from your own comprehensive insurance, so their rules apply. Obviously your insurer will regain the cost from third party insurer and therefore you are not going to loose your NCB, but until this happens, there is no difference if it was your fault or someone else's, as your insurer will provide only service they cover under your comprehensive policy (14 days replacement car is long anyway - f.e. my insurer covers one only for 5 days).

As I said if I were you, I would claim straight from third party insurer, as they are obliged to compensate you fully (f.e. providing you with replacement car for the whole period while yours is being repaired, or f.e. they are obliged to bring your car to the state from before accident, and that should include any loss in car value arising from the fact that car was crashed, while your own insurer under your comprehensive policy might only provide limited service - like repairing parts instead of replacing, etc).

Maybe I'm wrong in all this, but that's my understanding and that what I would do.

All new parts have to be used door wing etc..the car has to be put back right unless the work rises 2/3ds of value then its a write off which will leave you the option of keeping car and getting compensated or selling them the car and getting a higher price..

I'm claiming from her policy. I've just third party fire and theft myself. That's why I'm confused by the 14 day limit!

The cost of a replacement car is usually the time it takes to effect repairs, subject to a 2 week limit. Any reasonable work should only that that long
