    hi all,

brother is after a Diesel car, YEAR 2008 something like a new model superb or passat tdi or even volvo s40 2.0 D, but not sure how reliable the volvo are now
Audi A4 would be too expensive and New Model Octavia dont think came out til 2009 but think the superb would be more comfortable probably and they just look as good too..its looking like the superb but would like OP opinions on it too

    thanks

'New model' Octavia of that age is just a (questionable) facelift

How about an accord? What's the budget?

passat would be good all around and will hold its value

As long as you can get over the styling of the Superb then it is a brilliant choice

he thinks they look well, another question.. he saw an 08 2.0tdi CR, what are these like,(compared to 1.9tdi) are they reliable as 2.0 engine were not the best in the older skoda's,
plenty of power here too 170bhp

    also looking at this

but its only 1.9 tdi 105bhp wouldnt it be underpowered for such a big car

That's a joke. Why do they fit these low bhp engines in big saloons like that?

It'd do my head in driving it!

Believe me, I can think of far, far worse than that! :pac:

ok guys so which is best to go for in the superb the 1.9tdi or the 2.0 litre, is there much difference in fuel consumption.
He was looking at a 2008 audi a6 tdi but i think its best to stick with skoda

The 1.9 isn't that bad really.

The 2.0 TDi is a much newer and more powerful engine than the old 1.9 TDi. This may or may not neccessarily be a bad thing though given that modern diesel engines are not exactly bomb proof. The 1.9 TDi is less complex and very reliable once it is serviced regularly but nowhere near as refined or spirited as the newer 2.0 TDi engines. It really depends what he values more.

Colm, Would they not be a bit slow as these are a big car, dealer says the CR engines are good,

I just think a lot of people slagging the 1.9 superb may not have driven one.
If it was a passat, I don't think you'd have anyone doubting a 1.9s ability to carry a passat around.

    Some figures

    http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/facts-and-figures/skoda/superb/hatchback-2008/40659/

Key points; superb is 0.4 of a second slower to 60mph.

It won't win races, but its no more ridiculous than an a6 1.9

Very true. I've driven one, and while the 2.0Tdi is a better performer, the 1.9Tdi is adequate. Enough Torque to pull the Superb around and easy enough to get to motorway speed and keep it there.

We've a pair of 10 1.9Tdi Ambitions that are both approaching 200k. One has had no issues at all - still on the original clutch. One has not been quite as trouble free, and had the A/C compressor replaced, clutch done and a few other issues.

    Clatter clatter bang bang clatter.

I can think of better ! :pac:

OP, On a serious note though, the 1.9 105 was a brilliant engine and refuses to die if looked after, a bit fussy with oil but I used the long life oil changed every 15,000 miles in the A4 that is, 130 hp but same engine really and it was still good after 200,000 miles. So the long life service does not kill engines !

Forget horse power, look at the torque figures as that's what matters in the end. Horse power is a unit of measurement and the 105 ps has plenty of torque.

Think horse power if you want to go above legal limits.

I couldn't get into a diesel again though after the Prius, I got into my sisters 308 HDI a few weeks ago and thought there was an earthquake when I turned the key !
