Has anyone any suggestions for a cheap reliable car/van type? I have roughly €1500 to spend. Have been looking at all the usual sites but there seems to be a lack of these around.

You could have an early 00's Astra van for that money, bullet proof reliability, depending, like any car, on how its been looked after and drives like a car unlike the likes of a kangoo etc.

    306 van maybe?

Was just going to suggest this too. However, failed bearings in the axle and the amount of dodgy ones out there make it a bit of a minefild....

Did they not give a lot of trouble with injector pumps?

    My suggestion

They are nowhere near as nice an engine as the old 2.0 but still decent enough.

That is true, I went to look at 9 Astra's before I bought mine.

There bought to work, and as they age they end up with young lads turning them into sportsracingvans.

Someone down the road bought a lovely 306 00 1.9d van a few weeks ago, spotless, tested and half leathered, 1k. Hard found but they are out there, and even with the 1.9 a nice drive. Prefer a hdi, but a 1.9s a hard machine to kill;)

id look on them, if they are sdi diesels, then they are very economical. not really much power in them.. cant remember... i think something 64 horses only.

it is depen what for you need a van. for driving in city, those could be perfect sitting in traffic.

The corolla seems like a good idea alright. Problem with 306 is im 6'4 and can't fit comfortably in the car so presume van will be the same. Was also looking at citreon xsara vans.Any opinions on these? If only that corolla was closer to cavan.

A Corolla van would be my choice, but the bug eye model with toyota's own 2.0 diesel engine. Finding a clean one will be tricky though.
