I am looking for some information on my grandfather James Foley (Wexford,Ireland and Swansea Wales). He fought in and survived World War 1. He was in France in 1917 and 1918. He was awarded the D.C.M ( don't know what this is). Anywhere I can find out more info. His reg. no. was 30150. Many Thanks.smile.png

Are you sure about the DCM( Distinguished Conduct Medal) I have checked the London Gazette and the Dublin Fusiliers unit history and cannot find any mention of an award to James Foley 30150.

I have attached James Foleys medal index card.

kabakuyu was correct in regard to the DCM as far as I could see and I could not see anyone named Foley that won the DCM.

I did find a J Foley 40297 RDF that won the Military Medal . Dont know if its the same man as the number is different but it could be a mistake on his medal card.

do you have or have access to his WW1 medals? Presumably this is how you know his service number? or do you have paperwork relating to his service?

Some info re the medal index cards and WW1 campaign medals can be found at :

30150 Foley was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. His details should be inscribed on the rim of the medals.

There are 3 J Foley's that I can see in the list of WW1 Distinguished Conduct Medals - 1 Irish Guards, 1 Royal Engineers and 1 Canadian infantry.

The Royal Engineer was a James Foley

The Canadian was Acting CSM John Foley, Royal Montreal Regiment and is the subject of a book called "Tough as Nails"

The Irish Guard was Sgt John Foley, number 1226. His DCM doesn't appear on his medal card. He is listed in Kipling's book re the Irish Guards as a DCM recipient

Thank you all for your help. The only details I have are from a former Wexford newspaper. I think I may be on the wrong track with James's reg. no. It may be the wrong one.I need to check this again.
