Possible NCT Exemption Advertising Car?

The company I work for has a 1987 Citroen 2CV modified for advertising and shows. It is only driven 3 or 4 times a year to some corporate events and St. Patrick's day parade etc. It contains many additional fibres panels done up in my company's product. The vehicle has been off the road this past number of years and I have been giving the responsibility to get it going again. I fear that with these additional modified panels it won't pass the NCT. Is it possible to get an exemption for an advertising/show vehicle only used 4 times per year?

I can't say for sure but I'd imagine any car used on a public road has to be certified as road worthy and legal i.e. Tax, Insurance and NCT. Floats for parades would be an exception as its technically a closed road. Even rally cars have to be road legal on closed stages (Inter stage driving etc)

Only option then would be to transport it by trailer which might actually be a cheaper option if you already have a tow car you'll just need to rent a trailer.

This might give you the information you need: http://www.wvvmc.com/new-nct-regulations-for-vintage-cars

Unfortunately I think the car would have to be registered prior to 1980 to be exempt.

would it maybe come under the regulations for Showmans Vehicles? IS it still technically a car or ios it fact a sort of Commercial Vehicle now?

No exemptions. It must pass the NCT or the wheels do not touch public roads.

No ifs or buts, we have heard all the excuses and none of them work.

Correction, cars used exclusively on the islands are NCT exempt, so you know where to take it.

Surely rally cars can't pass the nct. Due to extensive mods, emissions etc.

They usually have a MOT from the North. I think to NCT it you have to remove all modifications.

that can't be the case, there are loads of Irish reg rally cars around. My guess is they just don't have NCTs ... just a guess...

Possibly... not an Irish plate in sight! http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=irish+rally+car&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=SuMXUeaVJM7I0AWznIGACg&biw=1280&bih=699&sei=TeMXUZ2wIunV0QWflYGQBQ

I can't see any problem having that tested.

Rally cars are generally UK reg as they can pass the MOT given it is a far more sensible test in this regard. The Irish reg rally cars are not NCT tested because they can't pass, strictly they should be but they have to be safe to pass scrutiny so the Gardai use common sense. The only issue where it becomes a problem is when rallying outside of the Republic such as up North, NCT or MOT is required to compete in their events. Anything registered before 1/1/1980 is also exempt from NCT.

As regards the Citroen, frankly it does need to be tested but if its out 4 times a year and taxed, you'd probably be fine but it depends on the Guard. Send it in for an NCT, see how close it comes and if its simple enough, fix it and test it. Advertising signs should not be an issue.

I thought rally cars all had an MOT/NCT problem with hydraulic handbrakes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 863 ✭✭✭goldenhoarde

for 55 euro The lads in the NCT will test it and tell you if its okay or not. That i think would be the easiest way to find out. BTW does it currently run?

If it fails for the mods maybe they can be removed before its retested?

Was just going to suggest that you remove the advertising material before sending it in.

Book it in and see what they say at the centre? If everything is fastened solidly it shouldn't be an issue, but that's just a guess of course..
