Companies which buy your car.

I'm just curious how companies like this work. Are they all just scams or do they genuinely buy your car? And then sell it on. It's just yesterday out of pure boredom I entered my car/van into the quote section on their website expecting a quote of about 50 percent of what my car is worth at most:D. I'm not even selling my car but I was just curious. They offered me what I paid for my car 7 months ago well within 100 euro of the price. Ill put down the website if its ok I wasn't sure if you can name the company. I was surprised I'm just wondering where the catch is really?

I would sell your car if you can get that price but I would be very careful because there usually is a catch as they will deduct money for type, model, spec and so on.

These signs you will see on poles/traffic lights are dodgy and don't trust them.

I was thinking it sounds dodgy now the company has an irish website that's where I got the quote and I just filled in this form with the specs of the car and everything about it. They emailed me a quote this morning.

    What's the website?

It's the same as webuyanycar in the uk. They'll give you an enticing "highest we'll pay" price for any car, then when you organise to bring it to them to give it a 'proper' evaluation, they pick it apart and knock money off what the online quote said, for every little negative thing about the car. Scuffed alloy? That's €100 less as we need to repair it. 4 lightly curbed alloys? That's €400 less, instantly. They'll knock money off for anything and everything they can and because you e made the effort to bring the car to them, you're already in a frame of mind that you're selling the car to them then and there, even if they low ball you.

Your probably dead right there alright. I don't see how else they would make any money out of it. Apparently this place comes to you to collect the car. I find the whole thing very hard to believe tbh.

A car has a market value. These cash for cars places are in business to make money so in order to do this they have to buy the car from you at well below it's market value.

But they didn't offer me peanuts it was a small bit lower than what I paid(100 euro). This is what I can't understand. Unless the value of my car has gone up or something.

What they do is they give a good initial quote and then destroy it by knocking everything they can eg fag ash in ashtray etc. They then offer you some crazy amount which most people accept.

What they then do is sell the cars on HP to poor souls who can't get mainstream finance.

    They win both ways.

Either way, you don't have to accept their final offer. If they come to you, you lose nothing but a few minutes of time.

I don't plan on using these companies to sell my car. I was just curious how the whole thing worked. Thanks everyone for the information.

I was sitting at the lights at newland cross last Tuesday at 8:30am and a guy came up to the traffic light and snipped 2 of these signs off and just blatently threw the 4 big cable ties on the road in front of me. I jumped out and challenged him and he laughed at me. I shouted to him sure I go over an tell the guard (imaginary I might add!) in the bus lane 50m down the road and I have his number from the poster.
He did come back and pick them and was still laughing at me. What a nice lad

I had an 02 Polo for sale recently and decided to email a few of these websites for a hoot.
Most turned me down flat, but one offered me E300 for the car.
Sold it a few weeks later for E550.
Don't do it, even if you're stuck for money and desperate, you're still better off spending a few quid on a done deal ad.

He was actually doing us all a favour as I am sick of seeing those signs fair play to him for taking them down don't be mad at him be mad at the a holes putting them up and if you feel so strongly report every sign you see up as it is littering...,.

These companies usually offer much less money... I believe they take a commission too. If they have a place near you its worth a try.

You got out of your car in traffic to shout at someone for dropping 4 cable ties?

What do you expect them to be in it for, a loss ?

    They are what they are.

These type of firms are dealers that offer quick cash / trade in value, and a quick purchase.

They have to fix/clean the car up, service it, pay taxes, rates, and wages, advertise it, get a sale again, and cover a guarantee before they might see a single cent in profit.

If you want more money for the car, and don't mind the potential wait, phone calls, time wasters, house callers and tyre kickers, then sell it privately.

    What's your point..........

We were just chatting about these firms and they do not give a good deal .

Your stating the obvious I know and everyone else knows that's the point behind companies to make money but these companies are targeting the very vulnerable and people who are crippled with debt.

The point is you stated they are "in it for the profit" as though its some sort of big exposé
"We're just chatting" about how any profit is not as massive as you would have people believe, or that they are "targeting the very vulnerable and people who are crippled with debt" as you also claim. Car dealers have been offering cash for cars, at trade prices, for generations, so never mind all the hysterical hyperbole. No one has to sell anything to them, they can sell their car any other way they wish. There's no extortionate fortunes being made in legitimate used car dealing as you would like to infer.

Obviously you know nothing about the car trade so cause I'm at it years and as stated by me and others there is a catch to these super super deals these company get back to you with.

I already agreed that the whole point in business is to make money but my problem is the way they do it ok simples.

Yeah right, like you always offer zero profit on the cars you sell on as a charity service out of the goodness of your heart. What's the matter is the guy next door undercutting your over priced motors ?

Ihave had to sell at a loss it happens from time to time and I get what your saying not shooting you down by the way.

I just see a lot falling for these types of deals and end up getting a hell of a lot less then what was quoted and so on.

But a great business to be in and would't mind having that sort of money behind me..
