I want to get a springer pup this year with a view to it being my sole hunting companion. I want to start training it through the summer. Can anyone suggest any good Literature or DVD's that you have found worked well for training your own dogs?

Also, if anyone knows where I could source a well bred pup at a reasonable price, I'd appreciate if you could pm me a few phone numbers.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Cheers lads.

Hi, i would recommend the Edward Martin box set (Complete Springer Spaniel Training Series 1,2,3). For me he explains very well and will show you what to do when you get problems and believe me you will have any amount of them. Id recommend a book called Training Spaniels by Joe Irving. You cant start training until the dog is at least 6mts old. Look up youtube and youll see different things to be doing a different ages. Its hard work, i thought it would be easy and i had sleepless nights:o my dog is 1yr old now and he will sit and stay and stop on the whistle 90% of the time and i usually do some form of training twice a day. i have a serious problem with the drive in my dog and i cant keep him close to me so off to a professional trainer at the end of this month for a while, costly but hopefully it will be worthed. if you can at all try get in contact with lads that have been there and done it, for the times when you run into trouble. Best of look. Remember dont be hard on the dog if he dosent do what you want, its a looooooonnnng road so take your time.:D

make sure u have plenty of old pants and jumpers !!!! buy a bag and put few balls a whistle and a few rabbit skin dummys in it . and make sure u bag plenty of patience;);) and remember if he is worth his salt dvds wont be required. try and follow a few trials and tests and dont be afraid to ask questions even if they sound stupid. and try and meet up with few fellow shooters and see how they run there dogs . and remember there is no easy way to do it and the long road is always better and more enjoyable .forget e collars and keep ur training/hunting consistant

The Gun dog training course by Eric Begbie. Can be downloaded of Amazon. Simple and easy to follow. Invest in an e-collar as well.

reading that book too at the min since snipe 02 was kind enough to give it to me as a gift!! very straight forward literature and when ur reading it the light bulbs start flashing over your head saying "ah why didnt i think of that", he really gets inside a dogs head and see things from there perspective if u like. handy book for beginers like myself to lads who have a dog with a problem. he even goes into detail of why some dogs have certain problems...there inherited from there owner!! so lads this book is a must buy for spaniel men
