    Hey

So I saw they are doing membership for €1,100 (Joining) & €1,324 (annual payments) which includes all GUI & Bar levys.

I haven't played it but was wondering do they have a good practice facility? Whats the course like? Location is perfect for me as I am moving to the area over the coming months as we are buying there..

Anyone any knowledge about the course apart from how Paddy is from there as I know they always had strong juniors when I was playing the boys events so I am taking it is a tough course.

    Thanks

    James

I never enjoyed the course that much, the whole course is on hill , fast greens a lot of laying up and praying you get a good bounce to get you on the green.

Edmondstown is a better course IMO that's open for new membership

Played it once or twice a few years back. As said above its a hilly course. Not a bad one but not one that stood out for me.
I think someone mentioned to me recently that its difficult to get on the time sheet there for weekend comps...but I'm open to correction on that.

I was considering membership in the same area but find it hard to beat Druids Heath. It would take 20 mins drive from that neck of the woods and its a cracking course (IMHO).

i think the descriptions here are pretty accurate tbh, haven't played it in a good few years but the random, unfairness of a lot of the holes was always annoying for me.
had nice greens in my day, don't remember any practice area though, used to be a good pro shop.

Thanks all.. I might look at Druids Heath...
I would need a practice area as I like to spend time on the range if I only have a couple of hours in the evening.

We (Druids Heath) have great practice facilities. ... A range where you have a choice of hitting off mats or grass, chipping area, practice green, short game area and apart from today it is rarely closed. We alternate singles and fourball comps at the weekend and are active in inter club comps.
If you fancy a round next weekend you are welcome to join me in the fourball on Sunday next. Pm me if interested.

I joined a year ago and dont regret a moment of it, great club atmosphere where theres no airs and graces. For me, the members and staff outweigh any debate over the course.

As for the course, yes its hilly but its not a lung buster and will test your golf. Its not a 'multi million euro' manufactured carpet, its more a constant work in progress and always improving. All the members and course staff take great pride in the fact that its 'their' course and it shows. Not the longest course, but you will still need all your clubs and all your shots.

I can be there in a few minutes and that is the huge bonus for me. The timesheet can fill up quickly, a lot depends on what time you prefer to play ..... the early slots are the hardest to get.

Competition day is Saturday, which may effect your decision as well.

The proximity is something that is really appealing. Somewhere I can nip over too for a few holes in the evening or to practice (what is the facilities like for practice?)

I think I will give a few a look as I plan on getting back playing pretty seriously and want to try and get back playing senior cup over the next few years.

Druids Heath looks lovely and the practice facilities really appeal to me but the thought of driving out there after work is not so appealing (I work in grand canal dock area) so something beside our house would suit and also as I will be having a new arrival at the end of the summer the more local club will allow for me keep some practice going (well as much as I can sneak out for).

What other courses are in the area and have membership open?

We are just buying beside Grange at the moment so that will be my base.

Thanks for all the advice it is really appreciated

    So join Grange then! :)

You could try a 5-day on the basis that you wont be getting many weekends to play with a new arrival on the way anyway?
Could go pavilion either or just go crazy and become a full member.

Hey MG thanks for the offer. Sundays are my non golf day as I have weekly plans. I would tend to get a early practice session in but need to be free by 11am so I won't take you up but thanks for the offer.

Full is 13k joining and 2k/year.
Im not sure about the other categories, pavilion is €750/year with no joining I think though. (With GUI)

You should take a look at Rathfarnham also, pretty close to you (though its only 15 hole)

Not got €15k never mind to pay for membership.. Mad money but they really can demand it in that area..

I would look for playing rights as the pavilion membership side of things doesn't really appeal to me... There seems to be allot of options out that area. I don't know most of the courses as I grew up playing Ashbourne as a junior until I was 24 and then stopped and was in Carton for 2 years until 2 years ago and I just couldn't make time with work so stopped playing.

Just bought a house so settling down so getting back playing again.

Pavilion in Grange is actually a pretty good option I think these days.
I dont have the exact figures, but you have full access to the back 6 holes at any time, get a full GUI handicap and also have your own comps and playing rights on the main course (typically after work or in the morning, which might suit you perfectly?)
I think at least once a month there is a pavilion comp on a saturday after the members comp.

If you give them a ring the will give you the full scoup!

Nice thanks for the info, I will give them a buzz about it. It would be very handy as I could hit a wedge from the front garden onto the course.

Sorry I forgot about your question re practice area. There is a basic practice area where you can hit irors about 150m and theres a short game practice area which is good. The reality is I use the course as you can just nip out in the evenings and play a few holes rather than using the practice area.

They have a practice area near the clubhouse beside the 12th hole. It is about 200 yards in length, they have chipping green with bunkers also, and a putting green of course.

That is pretty much bang on as it is mainly around the 100 yards and in that I will be working on.. (way too much effort hunting sprayed balls when much longer than this)

    Thanks

Played there a few times and know a few members. Seems to be a good atmosphere around the place. However, the course itself frustrates me as it seems to punish good shots and reward bad ones more than any course I've played.
