I didn't want to go to History forum

I have searched but realy if go to google for traffic you get updates and recents news.

Watching My Left Foot and at the start you see traffic going both westbound and eastbound directly outside the Four Courts.

The film was produced in 1989

I'm only a young 'un, when did this change? I can only remember eastbound traffic.
I can't remember a time when traffic on the Dublin quays wasn't as it currently is.

Was it a huge & difficult task to change the road markings and junctions and signals?

I think up to about 1979 the system was reversed. I don't know when the individual quays became one-way though.

Being an Owlone, I remember both quays being two-way. Don't know when they changed.

The last major change was circa 1982 when the Frank Sherwin bridge opened. Up to then inbound traffic travelled via the south quays and outbound traffic via the north quays (although the south quays further out were two way).

I don't recall that much controversy about it at the time but as I wasn't driving then it probably went over my head.

North and south quays were both two way for many years. I'm not sure when the older opposite one way system came in but it was probably in the early 1970's.

I'm not sure when the older opposite one way system came in but it was probably in the early 1970's.
I just found the relevant Statute Instrument (SI 51/1966). A very extensive introduction of one way systems was introduced on the 18th March 1966. It must have been fairly chaotic at the time requiring an extensive amount of new signage and road markings.

Interestingly, Burg Quay was allowed to remain two way as many of CIE buses (now Dublin Bus) terminated there. However a subsequent amendment in August 1966 altered that and they were forced to move across to Eden Quay which was then westbound. That probably explains why buses are still permitted to go westbound on Eden Quay while all other traffic there must now go eastbound.

I, William P. Quinn, Commissioner of the Garda Síochána, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by subsection (3) of section 89 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961 (No. 24 of 1961), and with the consent of the Minister for Local Government, hereby make the following temporary rules in respect of the area comprising the county borough of Dublin and the borough of Dúm Laoghaire :—

    1. These rules may be cited as the Dublin and Dúm Laoghaire Traffic (One-Way Streets) Temporary Rules, 1966.

    2. These rules shall come into operation on the 18th day of March, 1966.

    3. Each street (or portion of a street) mentioned in column (2) of the First Schedule to these rules shall be a one-way street at all times.

    4. Traffic using a street (or portion of a street) mentioned in column (2) of the said First Schedule shall travel in the direction indicated in column (3) of that Schedule opposite the mention in the said column (2) of that street (or portion of a street), and in no other direction.

    5. Prussia Street shall be a one-way street on Tuesdays and Wednesdays before the hour of three o'clock in the afternoon and traffic using that street before that hour on those days shall travel from north to south, and in no other direction.

    6. Traffic approaching a street junction mentioned in column (2) of the Second Schedule to these rules, by an approach route mentioned in column (3) of that Schedule opposite the mention of that junction in the said column (2), shall not turn right at that junction.

Didn't they change the direction of the quays when the Chapelizod Bypass opened, 1987 I think?

I seem to recall the big change on the quays being when I was a nipper; i.e. the 70's. Might they have staged the traffic on that quay for the purposes of filming that scene? It's been over 20 years since I saw the film, so have almost no memory of it. Was the scene set in a time when traffic would have been two-way there?
