Dublin 200 (if there was one!)

I’ve signed up for the Berlin velothon this year, I’ve just been thinking that it’s a pity Dublin doesn’t have a closed road cyclo sortif. When you think about few other capital cities have such a varied landscape around them: sea, mountains, rivers, green fields, a sweeping bay. I realize getting the road closures etc. is probably impossible (didn’t the DCC cycling officer almost lose his job over a city centre race?), but if there was a Dublin 200 what route would you have? Here’s my rough draft suggestion.

193k actually, google maps wouldn't allow me to add anymore points, but if it was extended a bit a long the seafont in Sanymount near the end it would be near enough 200.

If it was closed roads (or even if you didn't have to drop at the traffic lights as the Gardaí would hold up traffic on either side) I would say that'd be bloody brilliant.

I expanded the final leg up the N81 to bring it to Rathfarnham, then cutting back across Churchtown towards Belfield:

    (200kms now!)

Ah surely its easy enough to map out 200km between Northside and Southside.
I could easily get 100km from North of the river if someone would do the southside it coild be a runner for a decent Boards 200!!!!
Be a rival to the Wicklow 200.

Why couldn't they do a no car day? Have a few different things going on. Only buses and Luas running. People would get around quicker on this day anyway.

    Not so sure.

I rarely have my car in Dublin, but the week before Christmas I did.
It took me about 20mins to travel from D15 to town in the morning.
The fastest it has taken me on the bike is 13 mins.

It takes me 10 mins to walk to the bus, then if I dont have to wait for a bus, it can take 35-40 minutes for the bus to get to town.

In Dublin I would choose to drive if I couldnt cycle or walk to work for some reason. Public transport is a joke.

In terms of the map above I would keep going thru Newcastle and over Athgoe Hill, then onto Steelstown and up Windmill Hill, then onto Saggart and the Embankment via Rathcoole.

Also a nice way to get to Kilakee from Bohernabreena is via the resevoir and Glassnamucky Brakes.

    Totally agree.

Deadly idea though. But they do close roads for Dublin marathon and women's mini marathon. Could have a broom wagon to pick up anyone who lags behind a rolling road closure.

    Bags not organising that one.
