Prank Calls

When somebody pranks you from a private number, is there any way you can tell who it is? I got a call in the middle of the night recently and when I answered, I heard nothing so I hung up. It would be awkward to go into an O2 store and say, 'there's someone pranking, can you see who it is?' I guess the guards who have to request permission off the phone companies. Surely the phone companies can see who's making the call? Why do phones even give the option to put your number on private?

You weren't prank called. Someone either called the wrong number, or their phone went off in their pocket.

This didn't happen when you were smuggling a phone into prison by any chance?

A drunk ex was just looking for the ride, no need to worry.

theres an app for that. whatever an app is

Download 'hullomail' from Android market, or iTunes.

It displays missed calls, ie don't answer, or reject a private number, the app tells you the missed call number.

    Hope it helps.

Why do you think it was a prank call?

Why do you think it was a prank call?

Two obvious reasons, 4 am in morning, private no. and no one spoke

Yeh cos dialing the wrong number wouldn't be the thing you'd think of first.

I remember getting dozens of prank phone calls in 2008. Gits would do it every second or third day. Then just keep ringing back and back.

One of my friends was working in a meteor shop at the time and I told him about it. So he searched up my pre-paid account but could only look at who I rang and texted. Not who was calling me (Odd looking back, you'd think that info would be all there) So he came up with a plan of just giving him numbers of people who I thought it was (only 085 tho) I remember giving him a list ( :o ) but alas. Wasnt any of them.

I just eventually changed my number. Problem solved.

I got an app (android) called mr. number you can select numbers from your call log or all private numbers and either block them or send straight to voicemail.

You can block texts with it too (I was getting pestered with texts from Oulartns and couldn't reply to tell them to stop - My "STOP" message would "fail to send" ... must have been computer sent no number would come up just Oulartns and this app works a treat.)

Also would be handy for you at night time.

No, you need to either reject the call, not answer it, or phone turned off.

That's not what the app is designed for btw, its an alternative voicemail app, but it displays the number beside the voicemail.

Blocked and unknown numbers get displayed too though (not sure if the app developers are even aware of this feature)

But it could,ve been Face or Murdoch or Hannibal Smith with a job for the A Team and you changed your number.

Do people still do prank calls?

I'd say the 'phone went off in pocket' theory is more likely.

Unless it's happening regularly of course.

Was probably your sister's boyfriend accidentally calling while they got down to business in the room next to yours, OP.

What do you 'do people still do prank calls? It's one of those things that will always exist, just like ****ting, sleeping and eating!

well, no, because they're things that we can't survive without doing, so it's not really the same thing, is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,775 ✭✭✭✭kfallon

Surely they would have rang back a few times if it were a prank caller!?

Think you are being paranoid OP, wait til it happens again before classifying it under 'prank/nuisance call'

If you have an iPhone, use the Do Not Disturb feature which allows only numbers chosen by you to call during the night. This means you can leave your phone on in case a relative is ill and needs to contact you and you cannot be disturbed otherwise
