    Over
100 parking tickets have been issued to worshippers illegally parked outside
Galway Cathedral during this week’s Annual Solemn Novena.

Most of the tickets – each €40 – were issued on Tuesday and Wednesday but
particularly during Wednesday’s early morning session at 7.45am when illegally
parked cars prevented a coach operator from parking in a designated bus bay.

And while Galway City Council are unrepentant about their actions, one city councillor has accused the Local Authority of targeting the event to raise extra revenue.

    ref: http://www.galwaynews.ie/30259-council-unrepentant-novena-ticketing-blitz

Fair play to the council: I've had several people tell me that they decided to take the bus rather than drive and run the risk of gettin a parking ticket.

(See, they do the right thing sometimes.)

Who is clamping the cars? What location exactly did you see the clamped vehicles?
On the plus side there are no vehicles on the footpath on University Rd/Goal Rd (so far) and all traffic is navigating by unhindered.

    Thou shalt not park illegally.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 31,117 ✭✭✭✭snubbleste

Footpaths were occupied by abandoned cars earlier. I'm guessing folk are aware that traffic wardens sleep in on a Sunday.

    I don't know who I detest more.

    Clampers.

Or those who think they have some divine right to park where they like because they are going to mass to pray for us sinners.

    To hell with them all.

    Heil Carpark

    Heil Carpark,
    full of cars,
    The Clampers is with thee,
    Blessed art thou among Motorists,
    And blessed is the Residents
    of thy womb houses.
    Holy footpaths,
    Mother of kerbs,
    Pray for us parking now,
and at the hour of our clamping.

    Amen.

Loooads of cars parked on footpaths and double yellow lines this evening. Do they not ticket on Sundays?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,005 ✭✭✭GalwayKiefer

If someone is ignorant enough to park on a footpath the car should be towed away imo. A fine or a clamp still forces wheelchair users or parents with buggies to go out on the road to get around the car.

they really block the whole area up during the novena alright. The council/cathedral should organise a park and ride if they cant provide enough parking spaces for the expected crowds.

Well done to the council, wardens and private clampers. I have been down around the cathedral numerous times over the novena and very little traffic issues. Nothing like a bit of discipline

glad to see clamping in operatin for the novena goers - every year it's the same - they park where they want and give not a thought to any ambulance/fire that might need to get past their cars - same for buggys and wheelchairs. Its about time they realise that running into a church to pray does not exempt them from parking legally. :P

The clamping only applies to the Cathedral car park, not footpaths or the road.
University Road and Goal Road were a free-for-all in terms of parking yesterday and again at 0800 this morning.

really snubbelest, something should be done about that then. No special privileges - whats good for one is good for the other.

The Council did employ clampers years ago to clamp on footpaths. The contract cost more than the revenue earned and was very unpopular with the public so it was ditched...also events like the Novena and football matches were off limits to the clampers just like the wardens have chosen not to issue parking tickets for decades until this year.

Well I might pop down there tonight to offer some prayers of thanks (that he's going), and for a little more wisdom in choosing the next one!

I knew those clampers, and I never saw them clamp a vehicle parked on a footpath. Their favourite activity, as I recall bitterly, was clamping motorists in municipal car parks whose tickets had expired. Even ten minutes over was a clamping offence.

Any evidence that public events like the Novena and matches were off limits? If not, a damning personal anecdote will do nicely! :)

A novena attendee told me that the priest was apologising from the altar yesterday to those who had received parking tickets during the novena this year. Apparently he said that they would be talking to the authorities in effort to get them to show more leniency next year. Incredible

The Fr Ted approach to road safety, public policy, law enforcement and the mobility needs of disabled people and pedestrians.

Perhaps if they bless the roads next year it'll all be grand.

There was a time when the police in this country were friends of the church; speeding tickets torn up, drunk driving charges quashed, even a blind eye turned to the odd murder.

Not to mention taking a hand in the supply of forced labour to the Magdalene Laundries.

Just been listening to Newstalk 12:40-12:45pm
    Ciaran Hayes v Ollie Crowe
Ciaran Hayes said that the religious orders were contacted last year in relation to the illicit parking issues and that mass-goers were told from the pulpit to park responsible.
Ollie Crowe says the Council is anti-church!

Ciaran Hayes also stated that he does not have the staff late in the evening to enforce parking laws, that explains partially the Council's reluctance to tackle footpath blockages at the Novena evenings, Sportsground and Pearse stadium.

It's gas listening to Ollie Crowe trying to defend law-breaking

That really beggars belief. The penalty income from properly enforcing parking laws on evenings like that should be more than enough to cover any overtime rates that would be payable.

it would probably require more staff and there is a recruitment ban.

Actually community wardens have been witnessed issuing parking tickets on Friday nights at 11pm on Eyre St and Eglinton St.

its called a foot path for a reason.

    Not called a cycle path

    Or a car path

    ITS A FOOT PATH.
