I have a 2004 BMW 320d and Earlier today I was driving and strange clunking noises began coming from the under carriage of the car. when I had a chance to look underneath it, I couldn't see anything. I then tried to reverse it out of the yard and the rear back left wheel locked up and it was as if the car was attempting to try drive over the back wheel like there was something behind it but the wheel would not move. Any ideas or advice to what may be the cause of this problem??

Sounds a tad like gearbox failure tbh :(
Is it the same going forward or back? Any difficulty getting it into gear?

Broken spring after catching the wheel/tyre or perhaps a something has failed in the rear brake shoes on that side.

Was there any noises when driving previously?

    Really??
No it goes forward ok but im not sure as its parked facing a wall so cant go too far forward. No I neverreally had any difficulty getting into gear only every now and then.

Only today the clunking started and now its not moving at all...

It sounds like broken brake shoes to me.

Chock the front wheels, put it in neutral, handbrake off and jack the back off the ground if you have a trolley jack, see can you rotate the wheels.

Check for broken spring as per NDs idea.

Could be a few things. Gearbox would be very much worst case.

I can't see the little shoes that operate disc brakes being able to go looney sufficiently to anchor a 2.0 diesel tbh, could well be wrong.

    Thanks for the advice.
It's only catching the rear left wheel and it rolls back maybe bout a 1/4 revolution and then catches and then the car tries to push itself over the wheel, with suspension rising as well!

Very likely to be handbrake shoes separated and locking the wheel

Suspension rising? Erk. Sounds like the spring.
