Driving License and Car Rental - UK

I travel quite a bit for work so, given I had a short quiet period at work, I applied for one of the plastic card licenses to replace the 6-month old tattered piece of junk I carried previously.

I was asked today to go to the UK on Monday morning and I need to rent a car to get to my final destination. My new license hasn't arrived yet.

Is there any way around presenting the driving license for the rental? Or do I need to drag a colleague along to drive me?

And if you look at other driving licence thread from today, you will find out it might actually take weeks before you will get you plastic licence.

And we're off! No licence (and you'll need BOTH parts). No rental...

    See here.

    What both parts?

With my UK licence, there are two parts. I believe this is the standard across the EU.

The card part is the photo ID. The second part is coloured green and pink, and is about A4 in size.. It gives details of any endorsements you might have, and reconfirms the categories you're allowed to drive. With UK car rentals, both parts must be presented, otherwise they will not allow you to take out the car. I've hired cars when returning home. Once they realise I have a UK licence, then I have to hand over both parts. The rental place will also make a call on occasion to the DVLA to double-check.

    Thanks for explaining.
Now I recall I heard somewhere about those 2 parts of UK licence, but AFAIK that's the case only in UK.
Anywhere else in EU you have just one document, in most cases credit card size "plastic card".

Right.... looks like I'm screwed so... just booked the tickets and hotel for my colleague at a cost of €1,500.

I can't understand how they don't have an online tracking system for the license or how it's taking them so long. Nor do I understand how there is no emergency provision if someone needs to get their license quick or a temporary one issued same as passports.

At this point I might as well emigrate solely for the sake of my sanity.

If your colleague has a licence, then you're at the races. If not - CAB!!

No cab in this case... I'm heading for the welsh border from Birmingham. The limited public transport options would mean extending the trip by two days if I took bus/train.

This trip is one to mark off to experience, but if the delay goes beyond next week it will seriously affect the performance of my job. All for reasons anyone I tell who isn't Irish would find hard to believe.

I hear ya, buddy! I couldn't believe it when I heard this morning either. I renewed my (UK) driving licence. It went off to Swansea. I got it back in a week.
