    Hi,

last week I changed plugs, coil and leads on my nephew's Focus as it was juddering a bit. No warning was showing on dash

Standard procedure seems to be to change the parts listed above.

Just got a text from him this evening to say it is worse than ever.

I haven't had a chance to take a look yet and don't know if there is a yellow light lit now.

Plan to take a look tomorrow .

Any thoughts on first steps? I hope there is a code showing that will help.

    thanks for help.

    Richard

TBH standard procedure would be to have the problem properly diagnosed before buying parts. You've now wasted money on a coil and leads that weren't needed.

If a car is misfiring without fault codes then you need to start with the basics, spark, fuel, timing, compression......and go from there.

Codes showed up as misfire on cyl 2 and 3.

Removing and reconnecting leads at coil end showed that both 2 and 3 (.ie the one side of the coil windings) were not firing consistently,

Got a replacement coil from the factors FOC and job's a good one.

To be honest while I agree with ND, this car is twelve years old and a new set of leads and plugs and coil would be recommended regular maintenance at this stage.

    thanks

Coils and leads even in an old car wouldn't be replaced as part of regular maintainance imo, unless they were giving trouble.

They are a known weak point.
