To upgrade bike or components?

Hi all, I have a Felt F85 2010 model bike and am thinking of upgrading but unsure whether to change the bike or upgrade the components. If upgrading the bike I would be spending between €1500 - €2000 so would probably get carbon bike with the same components as my F85 – Tigra STI gears etc. with some weight saving from the frame.

If upgrading components I could get better quality parts. I recently bought Campagnolo Zonda wheels so that is a start.

Sorry if this is a repeat question as I am new to the site.

    Thanks for any help.

The frame is probably the single most important part of the bike. I take it the F85 is an entry-level aluminium frame? In that case save your pennies and work towards a new frame.

The budget would be overstretched if going above the 1500 really and it would mean waiting that much longer to get something but I suppose it might be worth getting a decent bike if upgrading. Sounds like upgrading components isn't a popular idea really.

Yes it's an aluminium frame alright. Would be fairly entry level - bike cost 1100 in 2010.
When you say save for a frame do you mean just a frame or a complete new bike?

You already have a good set of wheels and an aluminium frame. so by upgrading components you mean going from your current tiagra to 105, ultegra etc. so min 450 spend.

I picked up a carbon bike with ultegra on the rose website above for 1600 inc delivery.

Would you be holding your current bike for winter training?

That would be the main reason I'm thinking of components - already invested €400 on wheels and a new bike would have similar or less quality.

Probably would hold onto old bike alright, no point wrecking a good frame on these roads in winnter.

What type bike did you get for €1600? If ultegra on it I could swap the wheels. Cheers

Go for second hand perhaps ?

Frame and wheels are the 2 most important !

I got a 2009 Felt F1 with Mavic Ksyerium SL's and complete Dura Ace for €1250. I got it off a willy waver who done nowt on it but because it was 2009 he sold it !

I got a rose carbon pro sl. They are on sale on roseversand.com.

I bought new cos I had yet to use my Btw. Otherwise I would have gone second hand. Just takes a bit of patience.

I was a bit like yourself. Have had my first bike for 5 plus years. Replaced group set in may 2012. Replaced the replacement wheelset in July 2012. Essentially I have a winter bike now. Thought a new carbon bike was in order so bought it in the sales in January.

It's a tough call. But from a purely € to weight point of view you can probably knock a kilo off you bike's current weight (approx 8.6kg before the addition of the fulcrums) for €1000. 11spd Athena group is €700 at cycle superstore, plus another €300 to spend on fancy finishing kit.

You'd be likely spending close to twice that to get something as light new. But you'd make back a few hundred from selling your old bike.
