Micro Chip for DS

Can anyone tell me if a 4gig micro chip will play in the early edition of DS. I was told that one can only use a 2 Gig micro chip in those models. As I'm intending to get a new R4 cart for my grandson, I don't want to get a micro chip that won't work.
