College Issues

    Hi Guys,

Not sure if this is in the right area. Sorry if it's not.

I'll make this as short as possible.

I Started a 2 year college course in September. I missed 8 weeks due to a health issue which the college have confirmed and cleared. However, they will not let me return saying I have missed too much to catch up.

First off all, I paid for this course myself and they said it's too late for a refund, and secondly, I don't see how it will affect any of the teachers if I cannot catch up, that will be my problem. I put this point across politely and was rudely talked over by my tutor who so obviously changed the subject.

They said I will have to wait till next year to start again. But I made the point that surely trying is better than wasting a whole year without even giving me a chance to make an attempt, and if I fail the summer exams fair enough I will go back to year one again.

They are having no of it and being so flippant and rude and so insensitive about it. The circumstances why I missed that time was out of my control and they understand that but still won't let me return.

I contacted Citizens Advice Bureau who basically just said all the advice she could give me was to talk to the principle, which I did.

Is there anything I can do about it outside of the college, like someone who I can contact of higher authority than can contact them on my behalf as support? Or any legal action I can take? I'm currently on back to Education Allowance.

Any help really greatly appreciated. This is a very stressful situation for me.

    Thanks,
    Kristen

The rules in relation to attendance etc and sometimes laid down by HETAC so there may be an issue there.

If you we're ill for 8 weeks you should have been in contact with the social as you should have sorted out your benefits to be illness cover rather than staying on the BTEA. I'd get this sorted sooner rather than later or you will loose the BTEA.

Are they suggesting that next year will be paid for by this year's fee?

None of this is meant to be legal advice - just practical advice. Thread would be better off in an education forum in all honesty.
