feeding the cows before calfing

    as the heading says what do people feed
    the cows four to six weeks before calfing

    We would go with ad-lib hay or restricted Silage plus mineral buckets(Lifeline).
    Works well for us,cows would be in good condition goin into the shed.

    just silage. i try to take cows out a week or so before calving and put them into one of the calving pens. if they are a bit backward i give them a couple of kilo of dairy nuts. even if they are not i start to give them a sprinkle on the silage. it quietens them a bit and easier to get their head through the headgate when they go to calve.

    50% silage and 50% straw with pre calving mineral dust added. I find, with this diet you'll have cows that calve alot easier.
    Learned the hard way with cows over fed an silage alone.
