05 New Model (B6) Passat Gearbox/clutch noise

Hi, started noticing a noise/judder when engaging first gear on take off. Not felt through any of the other gears. Took it to garage today who didn't seem to understand the problem apart from suggesting the clutch may need replacing as a "lot of shiny metal showing there". They advised me to take it to a Clutch and gearbox specialist.

Seen elsewhere on forums that this First gear noise/judder can sometimes be attributed to condensation on the dual mass flywheel.

Anyone else experience anything similar, and could anyone recommend anyone good/cheap in the North Dublin area who could look at this?

    Cheers!

It's probably a clutch/flywheel problem. Which engine and gearbox does it have?

Its a 1.9 diesel, 5 speed. Have started to notice the noise through other gears now, always when releasing the clutch.

It's obviously impossible to diagnose over the internet but I would be surprised if it turned out to be anything other than the usual flywheel issue.

Thanks George. I take it its common on this model? Is that expensive to fix?

At least it's not a Vectra or a Saab with the 1.9 Fiat engine. Or a Mondeo. The whole subframe has to be removed.

Think the Passat is a bit less time consuming, thus cheaper.

You'll be advised to replace clutch, flywheel and thrust bearing. As if you only replace the flywheel, and clutch goes at a later stage, you'll have to pay the same labour costs again.

The B6 Passat 1.9 5 speed is about the easiest clutch and flywheel job of any car. You would be looking at about €750 supply and fit for a replacement clutch and dual mass flywheel. You can get a cheaper solid flywheel conversion kit as well which would save you about €100 on the job but there are certain compromises with refinement when these are fitted so we don't recommend them usually.

Great price considering Blackwater Motors (main VW dealer) are €1,220 for a Flywheel and Clutch replacement.

I've an 05 B6 Passat, BKC engine. Dual mass flywheel went two years ago, initially manifested itself with the exact same noises you're describing. Get it done before the entire thing disintegrates.

I got the clutch & flywheel done for the cost of the parts, but I'm in the trade. Shop around as much as you can, labour costs vary hugely.
