Mondeo sounds like jet engine when stopped

I drive a 2009 Mondeo TDCI. Recently the heater seems only to be working on the 1st fan setting. When I go any higher and have the heater up to max it only blows out cold air, when it's on 1 it blows out hot air.
Thing is though, when I stopped after my commute tonight (100k) when I got out of the car there was a really loud roaring off a fan at the front of the car.
Never heard this ever before, and it did'nt seem like a good sound. Anybody any ideas , are these connected do you think..

Your car has run low/out of coolant. The heat won't work because there is very little water running through the heater matrix. The fan you heard was the cooling fans which are running because the engine is too hot.
The system shouldn't lose fluid and the fact that it has indicates that there is a fault or leak in it.
Was there any indication that the car was overheating while you were driving?

i think it's a stuck thermostat holding warm coolant around the engine and not allowing it to get to the heater matrix. simple/cheap fix, get it sorted soon.
