Kindle Fire HD 8.9 question

Hi guys heading over to the states at the weekend and im pretty interested in buying a kindle fire 8.9 HD. Does anyone have one and would they recommend? i know i wont be able download apps from the Amazon store but can they be side loaded without rooting the tablet. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
