I'm trying to find a film about Norse gods and legends that would be suitable for small children and adults. Either an animated feature, live action or documentary would be good.

Valhalla is a Danish animated film and probably the best one for kids. It's a surprising underrepresented genre.

If you can find Fritz Lang's Die Nibelungen series, it would be worth a watch.

It is basically a retelling of the tale of Sigurd and the Volsungs using the Germanic version of the Norse characters so Sigurd is Siegfried and the Volsungs are the Nibelungs and so on.

Both films are silent films, and are hugely atmospheric.

Another film based on Norse mythology that I am quite partial to is Valhalla Rising, but it would probably not be suitable for children, and it does work best, imo of course, if one already has a good working knowledge of Danish mythology.

Sarxos has already suggested what would probably be the best film on the topic for young kids. Valhalla is a surprisingly faithful ( in bite sized pieces) retelling of certain aspects of Norse mythology.

The recent TV documentary called Vikings would also be worth a look. It basically charts the rise and fall of Viking culture and as a result touches on a lot of the mythology also.

13th Warrior is great entertainment. Up there with Knight's Tale for uncomplicated historical fun.
