I go there alot with work so can give you a few tips. The must do activities depend on what you like and if you are travelling with family, kids or friends.

As you are only there for a day I will assumes you are on your own.

Friday Brunch - If you are in Dubai on a Friday make sure you check out one of the Brunches. unlimited food and drink for the afternoon for a set fee. There are loads of these but always a good place to meet new people. The best way to find out about them is to check out the Time Out Dubai section on Brunch.

Go to old Dubai (Deira) - Away from all the skyscrapers this is the real Dubai with Dhows filled to the gills with electrical appliances and other goods lines along the bank of the creek. You can get an old Abra across the creek with everyone else and walk around the gold and spice Souks. This is a so different to the malls and skyscrapers. You can walk around some of the smaller street where that are full of tiny shops selling everthing from cheap clothes to carpets. There are also some pretty unique places to eat here as well. From tiny Afghan restaurants to hole in the wall bakeries

Souk Madinat & Burj al Arab - Down on Jumeriah beach the Burj al Arab is probably the most recognized icon of Dubai. You need to book a lunch or Dinner to get into the Burj and prices are outlandish. I would instead recommend you go to the souk themed shopping & entertainment complex of Souk Madinat. There are some nice souvenir shops here, selling non plastic mementos. there are also some nice places to eat and drink. It is all overlooked by the Burj al Arab so you can get some great photo ops.

Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa - The shopping experience is totally over rated in Dubai. Firstly remember that you can buy most anything in the Malls for the same price in Dublin. There is no saving to be had. That being said there is no harm in checking out these temples to commercialisation. The Dubai Mall has a nice Aquarium walk near the main entrance. it is certainly worth a look if you end up at the mall. After that I would head to the Burj Khalifa (tallest building on earth). In the evening they have a choreographed waterfall display. Kinda nice to see. You can also go up the viewing deck of the Burj Khalifa. I haven't done this myself as viability in Dubai can be shockingly poor is it is windy. Remember this is a desert and the wind whips the sand up.

Atlantis - A huge hotel on the Palm. Nice to drive out and see the scale of it but not worth the time there unless you want to go to the water park or swim with the dolphins. I think the Dolphin swim needs to be book well in advance and is expensive

Dubai Mall - Only thing worth seeing here is the indoor ski slope, just to say you did. It can also be odd to see some of the women skiing with their black Hijab's

Dubai Marina - The Dubai marine is another sight to behold. There are so many skyscrappers here right on top of each other. It was said that you could go to bed at night with a great view of the sea and wake up in the morning to find a new skyscraper was built overnight blocking the view. A bit of an exaggeration but worth seeing none the less. The Dubai Marina Yacht Club has a nice bar that overlooks the water. This is a nice base to start or end a short walk along the waterfront.

Transport - Taxi's are alot cheaper than most any other city and a great way to get around. You should also check out the Fist class cabins on the Skytrain. Trains are unusually in the Middle East so some people actually take the journey on the sky train just for the experience. Think of it as a cleaner, fancier Dart. the first class cabin is at the front so you get a better view for a euro extra.

Food & Drink - loads of great places to eat all over the city. The Indian food is always great and very different to what we get in Europe. You can also try Persian or Lebanese. lots of Shisha cafes around f you want to try out flavored Shisha. A good night time spot is Barasti on beach.

Other ideas - Go to dune bashing with Arabian Adventures. Check out the Dubai Museum which has a number of old building where you can see how the locals used to live only a short number of years ago. Check out the super cars at the Valet parking section of the Mall of the Emirates. This is beside the Taxi rank. You can also go t a water park or beach club along Jumeriah.

I'm not a big fan shopping at all but the dubai mall is well worth visiting. You could easily spend a full day there. The wife and I went there for a full day and we felt like kids again, it was great! We did the sea life centre and aquarium, watched an ice hockey match in the mall, ate pure junk food (doughnuts, unusual popcorns, etc), did the trip up in the worlds tallest building which is right beside the mall and watched numerous fountain displays which are on every half hour in the evening and are amazing. So much in one area makes it great for one day and if you get hot watching the fountains you can cool off in the air conditioned mall - brilliant

Hello. I'm gonna be there for 2 days in July. We've been warned that the temperature will be unbearable. Should we rule out the marina/old town/anything out doors?

I was in Dubai in 2016 and did not get the chance to use an 'Arabian Adventures' voucher of AED 250 (€64).

I'm letting it go for free as I'd like to see it used.

If anyone is going to Dubai for a few days this side of October you can send me a PM

    It expires 27/10/17
