Hey folks, I signed up for the Angus scheme and as part of this i have to finish a certain amount of cattle per annum.
To this end I'm thinking of buying some AAX heifers but what weight would they need to be now if i wanted them at 550kgs in December?
I plan to keep them in for a week to 10 days and then let them out with fresh grass in front of them all year.
I would then house them 1st October and slaughter in December.

I have no answer for you but I do have a question . How many cattle do you have to kill a year to be in the that scheme ?

You need to figure out how many kgs per day you will put on the heifers.

    10 months

    0.75 kgs per day???

    225 kgs gain

    550 - 225 = 325 kgs

Heifers need to be 325 kgs now to be 550 in 10 months time.

    (depending on kg/day gain)

I reckon it would be hard to beat 250 kg per annum especially from AA stock. I have two year old AA bullocks and they're only 375 kg at best. They can get fat and stay very small.

AA are very variable I had bullocks that only averages 0.4kgs/day over 12 months the fresians with them averages at least 0.7/day. I would not worry about finishing date I buy as heavy as possible over 300kgs if they finish early all the better, these type of heifers are expensive to buy. Idealy to finish before Christmass you would want them 325+ . Alot will depend on the year.

It's quite likely that they will be fat long before they reach 550kgs. The upside is they will fatten off grass on it's own (assuming we have a half normal year).

Varying levels. Anyone can be in the normal 10c/kg bonus scheme, subj to qualifying stock and payment of join-up fee €100.
AAA scheme which gives up to 40c/kg bonus requires min 50 cattle per year and has lots of conditions, incl booking in 100days in advance of slaughter!
    I just do regular scheme.
Still, some guys swear by it.

The AAA scheme is only 20 stock if you're breeding your own and the bought in ones then come in also at the AAA scheme bonus.
This is worth up to 40c/kg but as you say you've to book in advance, this would not be an issue for me as I finish at their peak seasons June & December.

Thanks Pat , here is something else I was thinking about - If you had big cows like blues or blondes and put an angus bull on them I'm guessing you would have a fine beast for killing that would finish easier than a continental but should be holding a bit more meat than a traditional angus .
Does the factory accept these type cattle and is their meat as marbeled and tasty as the traditional angus ?

As long as you have a pedigree angus bull as the sire they are eligible for the angus scheme, below are the weight gain i achieved up to October last year:
    Bullocks,
    Average DOB- 25th May,
    Date of Weight- 24th October,
    Average Weight- 255kgs,
Average Gain per day- 1.4 kgs per day,
    Heifers,
    Average DOB- 17th May,
    Date of Weight- 24th October,
    Average Weight- 263 kgs,
Average Gain per day- 1.4 kgs per day,

could be wrong in saying this but i think they have to be aa on cards

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,343 ✭✭✭bob charles

they have to be AA on the cards, polled, black, and look like pollies. Its a very strict on the criteria as I often talked to the guys they have working for them in the meat factories. If they are AA on the cards and have say horns, bits of white etc they wont quality. Probably not a bad scheme for suckler to beef farmers buy for buyers of animals for grassing or finishing its not great
