    What car is it?

Ask the garage how much this is going to cost.

it's a 05 chevorlet tacuma, and the garage is saying 750 plus the cost of sending it out to have the valves done :(

Well I would be getting them to get an estimate for the work being done.

No point committing to something like that, and writing them a blank cheque. The car can't be worth more than 2 grand, and I reckon it's probably more like 1700ish when in fully working order.

I know the car is not worth a lot, but I cant afford a new one without selling it to get another one and cant sell it if it is not running - a real catch 22

Have you looked at getting a second hand engine? It might be a cheaper option.

Has your mechanic taken the head off to make sure there is no damage to the head itself or pistons? If not, there could be more cost involved.

Looking at carzone, there is a private sale 05 Tacoma for €1,999 with reasonable mileage for its age.

You could chance putting it on donedeal as it is and try and get as close to €1,000 for it. That combined with the €750 already quoted might get you the same make and model again. It may be less risky than opening the can of worms associated with a broken timing belt repair.

Lets be honest though...there is no chance of getting 1000 for a Tacoma without a running engine. It's scrap value without the engine. Think more like 200 and then you'd be closer to the mark.

I would be considering a new garage to be honest. They should be able to tell you exactly how much it will cost and should not need to sent the head out anywhere to be repaired. Any mechanic worth his wages should be able to recondition a cylinder head in all but the most extreme cases of damage.

Having your engine repaired is normally the more cost effective option, especially in the long run.

We'd normally charge not much more then what you have been estimated and that would include having the head reconditioned.

Have a look below for an idea of what's involved in repairing an almost identical engine to yours.
