Network printing from Ubuntu

I'm seeing a lot more people around campus using ubuntu and this pleases me. However, I have been unable to find a way of printing to the new printer system from Ubuntu.

For windows users, there's simple .exe that installs them and when connected to a NUIG wifi network, you can send anything to be printed.

Has anyone figured out how to do this from Ubuntu yet?

Personally a Kubuntu user, but can you not ask ubuntu to search for "all network printers"? Sorry dont know how to do that in Ubuntu.
You could try ISS - but its a long shot they will ( be able to ) help a non-MS person.

    Oh my, what a surprise

    Oh my, what a surprise

The real surprise is how one poster can be so helpful so often.

Tell me, if you were to be nominated for some manner of Rehab-esque People of the year award, and no doubt you'd win, would you then have somewhere to display said award?

Possibly the most contrived insult I've heard :pac:

The point of my question wasn't what ISS supports, but whether anyone has found a way around their limitations. Linux users are usually more saavy than mac/windows users (and ISS staff) and may have found a way around it.

I've seen more students using ubuntu than macs recently, and even a couple of staff members. I wonder if enough people lobbied the SU whether ISS would get up off their arses and add support...

    But apparently, ISS says no.

Also ISS don't support linux for the Eduroam network but I figured it out, so now I dont have to sign on to the nuigwifi every time.

ISS have explicitly said no when asked before. Have you seen what they're like with computers? In our orientation they had pop ups everywhere, and couldn't get the sound to work.

First off, if you've nothing meaningful to contribute, don't post *rolleyes*

Things may have changed since I was there but, at least in the IT department, they were sharing printers through Active Directory so you had to add the printer using whatever printer admin tool there is with your particular distro and specify your username and password.

It's bound to be a little different for ISS. You can figure out the printer queue names from the print dialogue screens in any PC suite - add colour and monochrome. Then you need the name/IP address of the print server. Try messing with the queues by printing test pages. Check any logs (CUPS). I'd imagine you also need to authenticate to the print server, like in the IT dept, in order to send to the print queue.

Pity they won't just publicise all the info so people who know what they're doing can just set it up, as in other unis.

Oh I'm well aware of the limitations of ISS. I was hoping that there might be a way around since they use a commercial system, Pharos.

I'll try this tomorrow if I get a chance http://blog.uvm.edu/dweinbe1/2010/10/printing-to-uvm-library-printers-from-linux/

Have been using Ubuntu in the college since 2010 with few problems, except for this one. A nice web app solution to this would be nice. Didn't I hear someone say that Google Cloud Print works in NUIG now?

Also, Eduroam is acting the dick for me since coming back in September. It used to work great. In fact, it worked much better in Linux than Windows, since Linux supports WPA2 Enterprise out-of-the-box. This year, when I connect to it, it works for the first minute or two, then every connection times out.

I also have issues with Android (uses the Linux wireless stack) and Eduroam this year, where the actual connection drops periodically then reconnects within a few seconds.

Normally I file tickets with the ISS Service Desk about these kinds of things, but with this I'm not in the mood for the "lol Linux what's that we don't support that lol" response.

Meh, Eduroam works perfectly on my phone. You might have a setting ticked to something like "disconnect from wifi when screen is off". Ubuntu also works well with Eduroam, though I did have a huge problem with it when I upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10. A fresh install fixed all these problems.

Any ideas how to get google cloud print to work on ubuntu?

Right so my prof asked me to see if a couple things were possible, like printing to departmental printers without having machines registered on the network via direct IP (short answer: no, but it is possible to do this on linux if registered...)

I also asked the guy in charge of printing whether it was possible to print from linux over wifi considering the increased number of users. Not really...

They have a new product coming out soon called "Everyone Print" but until that comes out there is another solution.

Anyone can send an email (from their college address) to bwprint@nuigalway.ie and collect from a print station moments later. There's no way to change settings on this, so it will print duplex by default, and only one page per sheet. Also the software automatically ignores any attachment under 5kb (to avoid printing peoples email signature images - depressingly, the NUIG logo on emails is 6kb...) Some small text files may come under this limit and be ignored.

I was told that this is only on a trial at the moment for the next week or two so don't be surprised if it stops working. They do have a universal printing solution coming, so you can print from any device (finally!)

    You're welcome.
