what price do you want to know? .. they price you will buy it for or the price you will let the other half think it's worth?

99% of people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a €500 stone and a €5000 one.

Are wedding rings not normally just plain metal bands?

OP - you can get any metal you like, including non precious metals like Titanium. You have asked a how long is a piece of string question. If you buy a small simple silver ring you may pay 10 euro, if you buy a thick wide platinum ring with some engraving or even diamonds inset you might pay 1,000 euro or more.

It really depends on what you want to buy.

my bad ... I thought it was engagement rings.

Wedding rings can be what ever you want, my brother paid a whopping €90 for his (as he knew he would loose it ... he is on his 4th or 5th at this stage) .. while I had mine customer made from Platnium and paid quite a bit for it .... but that was my wife's present to me as of course I got her the engagment ring!!

I suppose im just looking for the price for an average earner. We are buying it together like. I just want to be prepared for when I go in the shop and if they say, ok, wedding rings are 1000 euro so im just doing a bit of prep work

I know nothing as to how much people normally pay for wedding rings. So dont know if 200 Euro is dear or if 1000 euro is dear.

Im not a millionaire, im just your standard earner

What metal is the engagement ring made of? That'll influence what metal you have for the w-ring and how much you want to pay. For example. My e-ring is 18ct white gold. My wedding ring is 3mm wide court style ring in 18ct white gold, has a bit of a pattern, and is engraved with a diamond set inside. Cost? £225 which is pretty cheap for a wedding ring.

Most jewellers will tell you that the wedding ring should be the same metal as the engagement ring. For instance 18ct gold is a softer metal then 9ct as it has more gold. If you put one type the metal against the other, then the harder metal will wear away the softer one much faster. For a man's wedding ring, you can have whatever metal you want, as (normally) you'll only be wearing the one ring.

In short, you can go for a plain, standard ring or you can have bling! Why don't you have a look around for what you want. Once you fix on that, then you can compare prices.

    +1 to above.

Also, browse the windows of jewellers shops!

Mine is a very narrow platinum ring that matches my engagement ring, it was around 400 euro. My husbands was more expensive, its a very thick ring with some engraving on it. I think it was closer to 700 euro.

My husband's cost about 20 quid, mine was many multiples of that. It costs whatever you want to spend.

As the others have said, it depends on the engagement ring, and if you want diamonds. Mine is a plain platinum 1mm wedding band. I have tiny hands, child-size gloves, so I didn't think super-sparkly suited me. No bling at all. We got it on blue nile, you can check it out here with prices for various bands.

    http://www.bluenile.com/ie/wedding-rings?track=link3

My husband did want a fancy one. It is the only piece of jewellery he wears, he doesn't wear a watch or anything, so he put some thought and effort into designing it with a local jeweller. It's a 6mm band, of two metals wound together. It cost way more than my band.

Don't worry a bit about what other people spent on theirs. I don't know anyone who discusses it and compares. If you do, tell them to mind their own beeswax. Pick one you like, and that suits you and that doesn't damage any other ring.

same here, in that mine cost something like 30 quid ten years ago, used to take it off 2-3 times a week with football and different things, then lost it, found it, lost it & found it several times again and then just stopped looking for it, it'll turn up again.

wifes one cost a few quid more, maybe 120-130 AFAIR, no more, shes lost/found hers loads of times taking off rings for washing up and whatnot.

If your a standard earner Id suggest 100-150 tops. youll get something decent for that.

If wife wants me to wear something on a couples night out Im happy with a barnbrack effort.

I guess if the OP is worried about being ripped off by a jeweller then approx prices of rings of different metals would be more useful, no?
Platinum is probably the most expensive you can go. So expect to pay upward of 400 depending on thickness. As mentioned, the band of the wife is best off to be of same metal as her engagement ring. So start with that, what is it?

My OH wants a tungsten carbide ring, apparently it's one of the toughest metals and won't bend if he ever gets his finger trapped and it won't need to be cut off. €90 online!

to be honest, I dont know what the engagement ring is made from

    Thanks for all the replies.

some of them are a bit in depth and im outta my depth when it comes to size, metal, patterns, engravings, wide rings, narrow rings, plain rings etc etc etc : )

I was just lookin for an average kind of money figure..................and I know now that they can be anything

As said, the woman's wedding ring is usually just a plain band of white or yellow gold - typically the same colour and width as the band on the engagement ring. That's €200 or less. Common "upgrades" are to have some small stones embedded in it or to have it slightly modified so that the engagement and wedding rings fit snugly together. That's bringing you more into the €500-€1000 territory.

ah sure tis all a cod really IMHO

I thought the big thing was the engagement ring and nobody even cares about wedding rings, but seems like that is not the case :))

Its not really a cod. My husband wanted to buy me a ring to match my engagement ring and we could afford to do so. He wanted a very plain, simple ring so he got that. If we couldn't have afforded the ring I chose, we wouldn't have bought it. You know you don't have to break the bank, if you can't afford to do so?

to be honest, I dont know what the engagement ring is made from

Can you not find out?? Either take the ring back to the jeweller who sold it to you, or you look at the receipt. It's really not difficult...

My brothers wedding rings cost about 700 euros each. I'm not a ring wearer but we wanted something to use on the day so I picked up wedding band like rings from Claire for 2.50 :D

Nobody is going to tell you that your wedding rings look like crap.
Everyone will tell you that they're lovely whether they believe it or not.

At the end of the day the cost of wedding rings comes down to what they are made from and how big they are. Gold and Platinum are VERY expensive precious metals and the more of that is required to make your ring the more expensive it will be. The purity of the metal influences the price.

Palladium is a semi-precious metal and it comes in much cheaper than platinum so may be an alternative.

Titanium is an industrial metal and these rings will be much cheaper again.

The bottom of the rung then is the cheap crap you get for a couple of euro in the pound shop or the "jeweller" equivalent. These rings can be made from anything most likely plastic coated copper or something like that.

Whatever your budget is, you'll get a ring.

I'm also in the process of trying to find good value wedding rings at the moment. Splashed out on the engagement ring but the wedding ring won't cost anything like that did.

Argos do a range of wedding rings in silver, gold, white gold, platinum, palladium etc. The range from about 50 quid up. I went in there last weekend just to try a few on and see how they looked with my engagement ring etc. It was handy just to get an idea, plus it's Argos so they don't give a damn if you just call in for a casual look.

So far, my best find has been http://www.e-weddingbands.com/.
Considering getting my ring from them as they seem like very good value and seem to provide a satisfactory service (has anyone else tried e-weddingbands?). The ring I've found is a palladium one for around 100 euro.

My fiancé will be using a ring he has already as his wedding band, as he'll only be wearing it for special occasions anyway.

Don't forget to add at least 30% on to the cost for import duties and VAT. Courier will not release the goods until it's paid. You might get lucky and have it marked as a gift, but don't count on it!

Sorry, off topic, but why will he only be wearing it for special occasions? If he already has a ring it can't be that uncomfortable.

Maybe he does a lot of manual work, or works in healthcare or something?

I went into a jeweler in Ennis and he wanted 450 for a plain wedding ring in 9 carat white gold Screw that

I got My wife a palladium ring that's more than 95% pure for €170 delivered from Amazon.com and she's delighted with it. White gold is a pain anyway cause it need to be replated every few years if it's worn every day.

Palladium is a lovely metal that could be an investment as the price will rise (it's more rare than Platinum and prices are low at the moment cause the russians are selling off their reserves)

I got myself a plain Tungsten Carbide wedding band that cost 50 quid delivered from amazon. I love the technology behind it and the fact that it will never scratch and I'm not into bling so it suits me fine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

I'm another who went for a Tungsten Carbide ring ordered over the net for about €50. My other half got a simple hammered gold ring made for her which cost a little under twice that.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 10,661 ✭✭✭✭John Mason

Himself got a tunstal (??) one which cost 12e.

I bought one for 19e but i looked a bit gammy with my engagement ring, so i got one made to match the ring and it cost 400e. That included altering the engagement ring slighty, so they would fit in together

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,147 ✭✭✭Ms2011

Any of you who purchased Tungsten Carbide wedding rings, how long have you got them? OH would like one but I've read online that they shatter easily if dropped or banged. OH does alot of manual work so it would be risky getting one of these rings if the reports are true.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

From my reading it's more that they'll shatter before they bend e.g. if your hand got stuck in something that would crush a gold/silver ring into your finger, the tungsten will shatter instead of bend.

There's no risk with tungsten carbide. They can easily be cut off in an emergency.

I would far prefer a ring that shatters. My mother had to have her wedding and engagement ring cut off in a hospital. Both were 'old' gold, soft metal. I will never forget the experience as long as I live. Its not a nice clean quick procedure at all, its a long painful procedure where the doctor is using a small metal ring cutter that has to get in under the ring in order to cut it. It took over and hour and she screamed for every single minute of it. It has put me off wearing rings for life. I have a beautiful wedding, engagement and eternity ring and I only wear them when dressed up to go out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,644 ✭✭✭✭lazygal

The extremely small likelihood that I'd ever need my rings cut off hasn't put me off wearing the nice rings my husband bought me. Sure if you thought what if about everything, you'd hardly go outside the door.

Ah sure I know that, but sometimes the horror of an experience can put you off something for life, I am not joking when I say I still have nightmares about that incident!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,147 ✭✭✭Ms2011

Yeah I obviously would prefer the ring to shatter rather than it injure a finger (OH already has a scar on his finger from a trapped ring injury) but some of the reviewa stated the wearer didn't even get passed the wedding day with the ring intact so that's why I asked.

Palladium would be another option, not that expensive either.
