I'd agree with 3 there, Bret, Benoit and Dynamite. I'd add HBK, when healthy always worked hard to make his opponents look good (apart from hogan, that was just funny). I have no experience of Misawa so can't comment. I'd likely put maybe Eddie Guerrero in too, what a performer he was!

Lads, if ye are going to do a list it is utterly meaningless unless you give reasons?

Also, of all time is a bit broad unless you have extensive knowledge of the business from the 1950s onwards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14 smithy84

I can give reasons no problem but then I'd be taking up loads of space writing about each person.if someone has a reason against a wrestler on a list then it can be tackled for that wrestler but to justify a whole list is stupid

I kind of hate the term. Surely Hogan is one of the best ever at 'working' the crowd which is the entire point.

    Bret hart
    Benoit
    Jericho
    Owen Hart
    Tommy Dreamer

Just for putting people over alone all were great workers.

Dreamer was good for taking a beating, anyone can do that to make someone look good,I respect dreamer for the punishment he has taken but he has no wrestling talent, might aswell put Mick Foley, axel rotten or sandman on there to

Yeah worker could be taken in any range of context.

Hogan, Cena, Rock, Bret Hart, these are the best workers for me, these guys work/worked 7 days a week doing make-a-wish foundation appearances, fan signings, tv and radio interviews.

Foley had great ring psychology and was very creative. An infinitely better worker than the talentless Dreamer.

Can't really do an all time one but from what I've seen my top 5 would be:

    Kobashi
    Shawn Michaels
    Chris Benoit
    AJ Styles
    Kurt Angle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,494 ✭✭✭Riddle101

I'm only going to do WWE wrestlers, not otherside because I don't know enough about Japanese wrestling etc.

    In no particular order.
Chris Benoit - I loved his intensity in the ring. He was so believable as well, he could sell ice to an eskimo, and made his matches look as real as he could.

Shawn Michaels - Great In Ring performer who has had many great matches. Mostly at Wrestlmania but he's had some good matches on the side as well, like his match with John Cena on the Raw after Wrestlmania 23.

Kurt Angle - Always loved his work in the ring. Like Benoit he had intensity in the ring, and was really technical. His only flaw is that he doesn't have great in ring psychology but I think he made up for it with everything else.

Dynamite Kid - Benoit was greatly influecened by Dynamite Kid, and Kid has always been considered one of the best. He was an innovator and great technition. His only flaw was what he was like outside the ring, but you can't dispute that he was a phenomenal wrestler.

Bret Hart - Excellent In Ring Psychlogy and storyteller, and a great technition.

Dreamer made my list out of respect and acknowledgement of his career, he done business I knew people wouldn't agree but that's why we are here to hear opinions.

In terms of actual 'work' put into the business I'd have to say Bret.

Holds the record for number of matches wrestled in the WWE & was doing like 4 or 5 nights week back in the house taping days or something ridiculous like that anyway.

They keep overall stats of total matches worked by a superstar? I would love to see them, I'm a total stat nerd!

Some of the wrestlers do themselves, I remember Jericho writing about it in his first book. I think I seen a list of stats on Wikipedia before.

The list was complied in 2009 but HHH & Taker wouldn't have had enough matches to get close to Hart.
Wrestling Observer reader compiled a list of which WWE wrestlers have had the most matches from 1980 to 2009. The numbers are not based on complete records as there have been a number of matches or shows that were not archived, yet the general order is likely to be correct. The History of WWE website the information is gathered from has an estimated 50-60% if results from 1980-83, about 70% from 1984 onwards and up to 90% in more recent years.

    Wrestler Yrs Matches

    1. Bret Hart (1984-97) 14 2,403

    2. Undertaker (1990-09) 20 2,226

    3. Tito Santana (1980; 1983-93) 12 1,885

    4. Shawn Michaels (1987-98; 2002-09) 20 1,862

    5. HHH (1995-09) 15 1,799

    6. Kane (1995-09) 15 1,748

    7. Greg Valentine (1980-94) 15 1,629

    8. Randy Savage (1985-94) 10 1,614

    9. Davey Boy Smith (1984-88; 1990-92; 1994-97; 1999-00)14 1,602

    10. Billy Gunn (1993-04)12 1,444

    11. Owen Hart (1986-89; 1991-99)13 1,439

    12. Matt Hardy (1997-09)13 1,432

    Hulk Hogan (1980-81; 1983-93; 2002-03; 2005-06)17 1,432

    14. Steve Lombardi (1983-03)21 1,409

    15. Edge (1996-09)14 1,406 The remainder of the top 30 would be Jim Neidhart, John Bradshaw Layfield, Big Bossman, Bob Holly, Jim Duggan, Ted DiBiase Sr., Chris Jericho, Big Show, Christian, Brutus Beefcake, Jake Roberts, Mike “IRS” Rotunda, Jeff Hardy, Rick Martel and Val Venis.

Bret Hart’s record would appear to be safe for several years. The Undertaker is unlikely to last for much longer even on a part-time basis. Shawn Michaels has been trying to retire for years before being convinced to return, yet again is unlikely to wrestle enough matches to beat Hart’s tally. Triple H could perhaps do it but would need to maintain a vigorous schedule and remain injury-free.

    Bret leads the way

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,166 ✭✭✭Stereomaniac

Bret leads the way in terms of in-ring work and overall custodian of the art of wrestling for years, I believe. I think he's been a great ambassador for the game when he's on form, generally.

I'd say Kane is rapidly closing in on Bret. If Kane has wrestled lets say three times a week since the list was compiled (could be a lot more or a lot less) that's around 486. He would be on total of 2234, putting him possibly into 2nd on the list and only around 170 behind Bret (seem to recall Bret wrestling at Mania, winning the US title and done a few house show matches since 2009).

Bret Hart did house shows on his return?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,888 ✭✭✭Charisteas

Bret Hart did house shows on his return?

Yes but none of them one-on-one obviously.

    European tour -

November 10th 2010 - Bret Hart, David Hart Smith, & Tyson Kidd defeated David Otunga, Husky Harris, & WWE Tag Team Champion Heath Slater.

November 11th 2010 - Bret Hart, Tyson Kidd, & David Hart Smith defeated Nexus.

November 12th 2010 - Bret Hart, David Hart Smith, & Tyson Kidd defeated David Otunga, Husky Harris, & WWE Tag Team Champion Heath Slater.

November 13th 2010 - Bret Hart, David Hart Smith, & Tyson Kidd defeated David Otunga, Husky Harris, & WWE Tag Team Champion Justin Gabriel.

November 14th 2010 - Bret Hart, Edge, & Rey Mysterio Jr. defeated Drew McIntyre, Cody Rhodes, & Alberto Del Rio.

    Canadian house shows -

September 12th 2011 - John Cena & Bret Hart defeated WWE World Champion Alberto Del Rio & Ricardo Rodriguez at 3:21 when Rodriguez submitted to Hart's Sharpshooter.

August 9th 2010 - John Cena & Bret Hart fought Chris Jericho & Edge to a no contest in a lumberjack match.

So since 2009 he's also done a Wrestlemania (Against Vince), a Summerslam (7 vs 7 babyfaces vs Nexus), beat Miz for the US title, and on a Bret Hart appreciation night in MSG - Bret Hart, Tyson Kidd, & David Hart Smith defeated Justin Gabriel, Heath Slater, & Michael Tarver.

And he was booked in a match vs Undertaker on the Raw 900th episode but that got interrupted by Wade Barrett.

They do 4 nights a week on average now, more if on a foreign tour. Bret's schedule was much rougher, in his day you could be on the road for weeks and might only get 3 or 4 days off a month. The old WWF was legendary for it's brutal road schedule, sure the money was good but I think the travel took it's toll on many and was probably one of the reasons why they revised it.

Yeah I couldn't remember exactly what was but remembered it was something crazy like that. I suppose out of the top guys Bret needed to 'work' harder because he never seemed to pull in big money as great as he was, we ever he went.
