Class. I thought it would take at least a few years to become a wrestling coach but now I can come to Dublin and become a coach in 2 Weekends. Will this certificate help stop people from coming in off the street and dumping me on my head in the wrestling class in my McDojo?

Is the I.A.W.A recognized by any major international wrestling organizations?

Are you certed at the end of the course or must you submit a coaching log signed by a certified coach some time after?.

This is the introduction to wrestling course plus the level one. It is a coaching course not a seminar. I would not be looking to attain any spectacular moves, just learn how to coach the basics and learn the basic fundamentals and ethics of a coach.

The I.A.W.A is the governing body for grappling arts in Ireland and is affiliated by Fila which is the International federation of associated wrestling styles.

You will not receive your certificate on completion as they need to be sent out to coaching Ireland and you receive your certificate by post along with your code of ethics certificate.

    at boards posters.

I've done this course. Mick and the IAWA guys are good guys to work with as far as I can see. The IAWA is around a lot longer than pretty much every martial arts association in this country. Perhaps even before somebody came up with the term McDojo.

It's a coaching 101 course. It's not a course to show you how to wrestle. A lot of the stuff is general coaching information, not specific to wrestling, although some stuff is wrestling/grappling specific. These types of courses are generally aimed at people who are already coaches, as I was when I did it, or people who already do the sport and are thinking about getting into the coaching side of things.

Yes Tim I totally agree. I completed this course last year, and IAWA tutors delivered an excellent course. I have completed Level 1 Coaching Certs from FAI, GAA, IRFU, Athletics Ireland, Swim Ireland and I can say from my experience that I.A.W.A Level 1 Coaching Course is among the best.

Thanks I was just clearing that up for the forum tbh.

I've done the level one Judo coaching course with the IJA and Coaching Ireland, and two of the lads in the club also done the wrestling coaching course so I'm more or less familiar with the format.

I got the impression some people might think they could go blind into this course and coach wrestling without a background.

With the Judo course I'd describe it more or less as a 'method of instruction' course which could be applied to other sports.

Good luck with the course, sounds like decent value for money.

I think this is fair criticism. Essentially you could be a Kempo guy, do this course, get a level one coaching cert, and then have your website say you are a wrestling coach, despite having never wrestled.

If this was any other scenario the knives would be out, make no mistake, this is a handy little earner for the IWA, which is a general coaching course through the medium of wrestling, which martial artists can exploit to give the impression they're wrestling coaches.

You're right to be vigilant but TBH I'm not sure the scenario you describe is really applicable here. There is nothing to stop the theoretical Kenpo guy setting up a wrestling club anyway regardless of certs/qualifications. There are plenty of cowboys that have done so.

I know little of wrestling but from what I've heard they have similar methods to MMA/Boxing/Thai etc with no standing in a line punching the air.
Lets face it, there are plenty of styles around that could benefit from a bit of a shakeup, training methodology-wise.

I think Magic means, or my reading of it, is the case of a Krav group offering a two day coaching course ~ the forum would be all over it, and he's not wrong.

In the case of the IJA/Coaching Ireland coaching cert an applicant (for the course) must be minimum brown belt. When the course is finished he/she must complete a training log and have it signed off by an IJA coach over (I think) twenty classes.

Almost forgot, accompanying the log must be lesson plans for each of those classes signed off on.

    *just for your info.

There seems to be a few clubs (not just mma) that are offering wrestling classes without certified instructors or any wrestling experience.

I would love to see real wrestling clubs opening up all over the country but un-fortunately clubs just want wrestling for the take-downs and don't drill the essential ground work necessary to gain the grappling advantage for the stand up.

For the L1 Wrestling we do not use a log book. There will be a logbook introduced to be signed inbetween L1 & L2 courses though. And possibly a grading to be taken into account. This is still under discussion.

Is there anywhere to find out about wrestling competitions in Ireland? Are there even any?

I added the irish wrestling association on facebook but its just funny pictures of cats.
